governor granholm.out all the numbers and what you see what happened in wisconsin with these voter suppression laws. how do we look at 2012 with all this information at hand? >> you have obviously as you described two sides of the story. there are 180 voter suppression laws that have been introduced in 41 states. clearly that impact youth vote especially when you have to have a voter i.d. that reflects where you live, if you're going from campus to campus, that was the problem in wisconsin. to me what is the most optimistic and hopeful is the first statistic that you said. since 2008 4 million millennials per year have aged to becoming eligible to vote. 16 million more. in 2008 those millennials, and they were only 40% of the electorate at that point in 2008, they provided obama with a 7 million-vote bulge. all this information comes from a great book by morley winnegrad called "the millennial momentum." it says in 2012 if half of them vote, they could create a 10 million vote bulge for the president. >

i'm john fugelsang filling in for governor granholm. pace of social change is accelerating, and i got to say no minority has ever made so much progress in so short a time towards social acceptance as the lgbt community. i was a teenager in greenwich village during the 80s and i got to witness how how the a.i.d.s. crisis of the 80s forced and demand rights that would never have been given otherwise. if you would have said that an u.s. president would go on tv and endorse marriage equality no one would believe it. of course there is still a lot of work to be done and hatred to combat but most of the lgbt community should be proud. i say most not necessarily all because one segment of that community has not necessarily shared in all the advances would be, of course, by sexual americans. the little "b" in lgbt. they have experienced their own prejudices. all too often they're misunderstood by both the straight and gay communities. they're too often unfairly labeled as insincere greedy to dilutors of the brand. by sexual men are mocked, and

(vo) former two term governor, jennifer granholm, is politically direct on current tv >> what shoulding? >> electing women to office. >> eliot: who really won the wisconsin recall election? well, governor scott walker kept his job, of course, so he didn't "lose." but the people who won were the campaign professionals which brings us to the number of the day, $8 million. that's a rough estimate of how much was spent on wisconsin's recall elections. that's not even including last year's senate recalls. several sources are still compiling data for an exact number but so far they've already accounted for at least $63 million spent. that alone makes it the most expensive election in the state's history. obliterating the old record of $37.4 million spent on wisconsin wisconsin's last gubernatorial race. with everything at stake in wisconsin it's no surprise that so much money flooded into the respective campaigns from outside interest groups. but is this the new normal? it certainly seems that way. every contested election in our country has become and will remain a budgeted battleground.
