secretary of energy jennifer granholm. good to have you on the show this morning.at exactly he's asking the oil companies to do. and i just wonder if the president needs to sort of level with the american people about the situation, the energy situation globally. and how it's impacting gas prices here at home. because isn't it the case that some of this he cannot control? >> oh, totally, mika. i mean, there's so much that is beyond my leader in the globe's control, unless they own, state-owned enterprises that are producing gasoline. so oil is traded at today about $120 a barrel. and that price is being paid by people in japan. it's being paid by people in europe. in fact, gas prices today over $5 a gallon in united states. in canada, you'd be paying$6.20 something like that. in germany, $8 a gallon. in singapore, you'd be paying $9 a gallon. it's happening all around the world. but the united states is the largest producer of oil and gas and the president feels like we've got an additional responsibility, we as a country, but really our oil and gas producers have

prices, oil executives visit washington today for an emergency meeting with energy secretary jennifer granholm. >> is there a chink in the supply chain that is preventing some refineries from coming back online? is it something difficult to acquire? those are the kinds of difficult questions we'll be asking. >> reporter: she is suggesting the president could invoke the defense production act to boost gas supplies. the white house accuses oil companies of benefitting from the war in ukraine by keeping the supply of refind products low while raking in record profits. president biden wants them on increase the amount of oil refined from crude for heating oil. >> bring down the price you're charging at the pump to reflect the price you are paying for the product. do it now. do it today. >> reporter: but analysts say refineries are already running at close to full capacity. the american petroleum institute claims the refinery shortage. some have closed due to environmental standards and no new major refineries have been built in decades. >> it is because of the permitting and more importantly, putt

>> my understanding is that energy secretary granholm will be there. they really want the refineries to, they want them to refine more, but that's not going to happen. because if you like the numbers, as refineries are already working at capacity. and we've seen the amount of refining capacity in this country go down by, i think, 1 million barrels per day, which is quite a bit over the last couple of years. refineries have closed, companies haven't wanted to invest, and so it's really frustrating to the administration. they are seeing these all companies and other owners of refineries making a lot of money at the time cast prices are going up they want to do something about it. the problem is there isn't much they can do about it. you know, we are seeing this happen in all kinds of countries. the price of gas is, you know, it goes along with world markets, right and? so unless you are going to nationalize the energy companies you, know, which they do in venezuela and saudi arabia, where they can bring the prices down, you don't have a lot of other opti
