grant. why? part of a panel where we are discussing life after the white house. i work on ulysses s grant's presidency. i have done some research into his life after the presidency. one of the most interesting things about his life after the presidency is he took a trip around the world. world tour's were pretty prominent. in the 19th century. grant is the first american president to travel the world. few other presidents had gone to europe. he truly traveled the world. asia, thessia, caribbean, mexico, the united states. including a visit to london. a meeting with the queen. why was that significant? >> it was a significant because the other countries of europe looked to queen victoria to see how she would receive him. thenteresting anecdote in work that was going on prior to his visit. they were discussing how should the queen receive him. should he be considered a private citizen? or a head of state. as counterpart said he's not head of state, he's private citizen. he says you treated nap

(catherine) andy lopez is the 13-year-old boy shot and killed by a sonoma county sheriff's deputy in october of 2013... he'd been holding what looked like an ak-47....but it was actually a plastic pellet gun made to look like one.. today the u.s. supreme court declined to get involved with the case --- leaving in place lower court decisions in favor of the teenager's family. they accuse the deputy of using excessive force. the case now goes back to a district court in oakland for trial the deputy says he shot lopez after seeing him carrying what looked like an assault rifle. he claims he fired as lopez was raising the gun toward him. the boy's parents say they don't believe he was raising the toy gun. the family's attorney says he expects a trial to get underway within the year. gran

(grant) news (grant) now to our four zone forecast... as we take this live look outside at the embarcadero... joining us now is chief meteorologist lawrence karnow... lawrence karnow: this is the last full day of spring but it seemed more like sumnmer with patchy coastal fog and sunshine elsewhere. it's breezy again and more fog will move back along the coast and bay. you can see a few thunderstorms to the north on doppler radar. but on the satellite image you can see as high pressure builds in startinig thursday the temperatures start to warm up. by friday the winds turn offshore and sends temperatures soaring near 100 degrees into the weekend. tomorrow is the first day of summer and it will start to heat up. we can expect hot 90s inland but much cooler 50s and 60s at the coast. this weekend looks hot with triple digits inland and even some 70s near the coast. fire danger will be elevated inland with some gusty winds in the north and east bay. cooler weather and more low clouds and fog will return next monday.

grant. you've talked about the need to strengthen investments in high-quality career and technical education programs and s.t.e.m. education, but the budget proposal doesn't back that up. so why does flat funding and even cutting funding for these programs support this -- your commitment to career and technical education and s.t.e.m. if they are, indeed, priorities for you? >> well, thank you, senator, for that question. to put the budget a little more in context, when this budget was proposed it was within the parameters of the broader administration budget proposals and so decisions had to be made around programs that were most effective in reaching students and the needs that they have and that resulted in the proposed elimination of a couple of the programs that you've referred to because they are spread thinly and they have been demonstrated to not be particularly effective. that said, any line item that has been basically flat funded from -- the propose to be flat funded from 2017 is c
