and what other people might like to eat at the airport, and i get to go out into this great city and look for new concepts that will perform well for us. my impression of san francisco as a relative newcomer is that it is a city that strives for, foster's innovation, creativity, and excellence. it feels like a place of great hope to me, a place of high ideals, a place of confidence. i believe or i know that we at the airport have very high standards set by our leadership, the city's leadership, but i think also set by the spirit of this city. i drive over the hill, we call it, every night along the coast, and i still cannot believe that i get to live and work here. john and leo had given me a lot of freedom to be more creative, and for that, i'm thankful. my husband and children have given me a lot of freedom to spend time at work and thinking about work and talking about work, and for that, i'm thankful. i could not do it without my dear husband who takes care of our daughter, the most important job in the world to me, and for my children being patient with the time i am away from th

here we are celebrating the first chinese-american mayor in our great city. it is a remarkable thing and a very proud dana. -- thing. i spoke a little bit about this yesterday, but it is important set this reminds everybody this is the birthplace of the united nations. this is a city of remarkable diversity. we do not just tolerated. we celebrate it. that is a spirit of what makes sense and cisco a special place in the hearts and minds of people -- that makes san francisco a special place in the hearts and minds of people. mayor lee, here is my advice. you have a year, figure out what you want to accomplish. you were put in this position by the people to my right, but the people of san francisco are the people counting on you. [applause] >> thahalwelcome to jim gardner. >> having been involved in moderating this for a good few years, we saw examples from the first thing this morning that both -- that mayor's can relate to. and they have sat down beside each other and they have sat down with each other and that was nice to see. what did you do to reenergize oakland as a good place to do business? >> the core of the plan was to revitalize downtown and he has this famous goal and it got to about 6000 if you include the projects and they are waiting for the economy to come up. that was critical to revitalizing downtown. san francisco as the number 1 retail city in the bay area. oakland has made an amazing investment. we have industrial areas. >> how much will your strategy rest

you are going to be doing all day today is something that i think is part of the history of this great city. we have always found a different way to do things. back in 2004 when we started project homeless, and now, this is the 38th time -- you are making and continuing a piece of history that over 220 other cities in this country are trying to copy. 220 other cities. we helped out over 31 dallas -- 31,000 homeless people. we had over 20,000 volunteers like yourself today, and i want you to take a moment and looked at each other, look at yourselves. this is the duty of san francisco and the bay area right here in this room. i love you all for doing this. a large part of my life has really been to work with volunteers. you get the greatest things done when you do it from the heart. not doing it for money. not for fame or politics. today, what you are going to be doing is offering probably one of the few smiles that people on the streets get. a genuine look directly into the eye. an offer of assistance of how i can help you. what do you need? what can we do today to make their life a little e

german and japanese, to find their way into your neighborhood with japan town -- and these great restaurants. a city with great nightclubs, the bring over a million people here on a daily basis, to find their way for jobs and all the other things. this is a successful city. the diversity and the strong neighborhoods in the different languages, things that we love about the city. those principles, of the same city and a successful city, that is what i wanted. now we have a difficult decision, how do we bridge the gap of the budget, and how do we make certain that this decision does not hurt people more, and maintain the level of services that they want and keeps you excited about the city, and keeps you committed to being here. i want to throw out to the civic engagement staff tonight, and through an agreement last with the board of supervisors, we funded part of the city administrator's office to make certain that we have language capabilities, not just in these capabilities by -- they have people on staff tonight to make certain, that english is not your first language, you can communicate your con

i have parties and i have been sharing those with many members of our great city. i have a $380 million budget to balance as do many mayors. we will do it to keep our city solvent. pension reform has to be done because that is leaking our general fund. my job is to get everyone working together in one direction and not multiple -- on our electoral -- electorate. you have seen the america's cup. the excitement generated is true. if you have been paying attention, you saw a barge come into the area. that was carrying the catamaran. when you see this constructed, this will exceed the height of the golden gate bridge. it will become the symbol of the excitement that -- will bring to this area. $1.4 billion of economic investment, just under 9000 jobs, 700 and construction, hundreds and hundreds of businesses will be produced. this represents how this city becomes and always has been successful. that is part of my whole budget plate. we must have a safe city and a city that is successful. today, we are beginning dc "processed. in working with the port and all of the oth
