look at the six years before the great depression, the great depression, or the last eight emerging market financial crises and you can see what happens when governments stand back in the hope that they burn themselves out or aversion. when they let it burn in that context it is devastating. devastating to investors or shareholders of banks. it is devastating to the innocent victims. again, the great depression, of course, of course, we have no memory of that. unemployment went to 25%. a 25 percent. a decade of soup lines and shantytowns around the country. this crisis, the size of the financial shock at that stage was five times greater than what happened at the beginning of the great depression. to protect people from the consequence or to do as much as we could, you had to use overwhelming force. even though it looked deeply unfair, seemed, seemed counterintuitive, had moral hazard risk, a lot of financial risk. but if we had not done that then we faced this certainty of dramatically worse economic outcomes. so that is the basic thesis of the book. you know, it is not an easy thing to m
