stan greenberg, we should note does polling for nbc news. great thanks for joining us tonight, sir. >> npr and l.a. times. >> we got the whole roster out there. give us your assessment of the caucus tonight and what you told them and how much they listened? >> this issue is obviously taken seriously. i came over here, the caucus was supposed to be over, it was still going on, discussing this subject with a lot of support for addressing this. i don't want to talk about what members said in the caucus. that's for them to raise. i can talk about, you know, the polling that we did, and what i said, which was, essentially, this is an issue in which about 38% of the country supports the republican position to extend these tax cuts. which is ten points below the vote that republicans are getting right now. so this is an issue that drags them down. it's an issue that helps democrats. it is an issue that i believe democrats want, it creates a framework of choice, and it defines the two parties. it's a defining issue. democrats need that, both to buil

stan greenberg talked about that. and i think it does let people know throughout the country whose side are you on. and when you've got mitch mcconnell coming out and saying you know what? 98% of the american people, their tax relief has to wait until we do something for the top 2%, even though it puts it on our national credit card, and we all are going to be paying years and years for those tax cuts for the very wealthy, that's an issue that clearly defines the candidates and the parties. >> congressman, wouldn't calling these tax cuts what they actually are, the obama middle class tax cuts and then forcing republicans to go out there and vote against them in a month before the election, or even in the senate filibuster against them, would that not be manna from political heaven for the democrats, especially the way the midterms are shaping up 49 days out? >> look, i do think it's worth a fight. i do think it's worth a vote. as to whether we start in the house or the senate, that's obviously something that we have t

gregg greenberg is a reporter at thestreet.com. he joins us from the nasdaq. >> tom: welcome back to n.b.r., gregg, nice to see you. >> always great to be here. >> tom: what kind of shape is the retail industry in as we head into the fourth quarter? >> well, over the last month, let's call it, retail stocks have outperformed the indices, and a lot of people say this is because you had some good august same store results, which means that the consumer is opening up their wallets, and we need them to open their wallets because it is a big part of our economy. what we'll find out over the next few weeks is which retailers are doing the best, and we'll see that from back-to-school sales, which are a big lead-in to christmas sales, the most important of the year. >> tom: what kind of inventories are stores expected to carry into that christmas season because that clearly winds up on the bottom line when it comes to fourth quarter margins. too many inventory, and odds are the sales margins get pinched. >> we had good inventory sales numb

a rich person is the one who scenes my paycheck. >> paul: kim, the president says that like stan greenbergics works, all you do is raise taxes on the well-to-do, don't worry, nobody will care. so, that isn't flying in some of these blue dog districts around the country and do you think it's because of the shape, the state of the economy, the iffy state of the economy? >> yeah, no, look, right now this is the worst possible time democrats could be dealing with the tax issue. 9.6% unemployment, there's talk of a double dip recession. the business community has turned against them and is making an issue out of this saying if you pass a new tax hike on us, on capital gains and dividends, you know, this is going to further impede our ability to grow the economy and so they're out there. this message is not flying. if this was such a winner, you know, the president would have all of his people on board wishing to do this, instead they're running the other way. >> paul: you know, dan, i mean, the best thing for the democratic party would be right now to extend those tax, those lower rates for two

fl that's sally greenberg, head of the national consumer's league, who spoke with me by satellite. greenberg also sits on verizon's consumer advisory board and she thinks the company needs to give consumers a lot more details on their bills. >> one of the things that's so frustrating for consumers is that when you get some of these charges, they're not explained. >> reporter: so how did those games get on kim vote's phone and why was she getting charged for them? verizon couldn't explain it to kim or to nbc 4. but the company did nadmit to u that many phones come with games already on them on a free trial basis, but customers aren't necessarily told about it. she's not the only consumer who's had a run-in with verizon over data charges. just a year ago, a columnist for ohio's biggest newspaper wrote about monthly data charges showing up on her verizon bills. she says verizon could never clearly explain the charges. over 1,000 readers e-mailed back saying they, too, were getting hit with similar unexplained charges. >> take a look at your bill, as soon as it comes in. if you see cha
