the standard for green seal helps to increase the products, the green products, the green services and assist in aiding green jobs within a city. a certified green seal hotel gets rid of the -- approximately 400 tons in average to a regular hotel. that's like taking 73 cars off the road. the strict standards that have been employed to address the certification for the kempton hotels have included an audit, not just energy audit, but a full audit of each of the hotels. so, again, i would sigh that green seal couldn't be more pleased to be here and to say how important it is that kempton hotels have provided environmental leadership, not only here in the city, but as a model for their industry. just give greens a chance. just give them a chance. everyone wants to look good, feel better, and have more energy, and that's where these guys come in--dark, leafy greens. nutritionists call them the superheroes of the vegetable world. they say they are packed with vitamins "a," "c," and "k," as well as iron, calcium, and fiber. and because of all of that nutritional appeal, what started out more as a comfort food has found acceptance amongst the masses as of late, yet few of us quite know what to do with them when we see them in the store--unless, of course, you're in ventura at the 71 palm restaurant. that's where you couldn't find a bigger fan of dark, leafy greens than chef poireir. >> ok. we got a baby bok choy. beautiful. nice and pretty. we got a bit of chard right now, the red and the green. just direct from the farm. et voila. >> it's like a whirlwind in the kitchen with this chef as he makes cooking with greens actually look easy. take, for example, this dish. he adds noodles and a little white wine reduction with some sweet

the green building -- cal green -- fitting into our green coat. he did a wonderful analysis, different spreadsheet to show that we were more or as restrictive. the one thing that floated to the surface, in cal green, there is a medium building category. i think it is thousandto -- 5000 to 20000 --those would be small buildings to us in san francisco. so they are going to be captured in a way that is more akin to the larger buildings. i think that is all. if there are any other questions, i would be happy to answer. >> i have a strong concern for the gray water systems that we are in the process of looking into. is that part of the pummeling -- plumbing, progress moving forward? >> frankly, i am not the expert, so i do not know where that is coming into the picture. >> gray water systems have become an issue. department of building inspection has tried to get ahead of the curve by adopting one of the policies in the gray water system so that we have a basis to review those things. we are working with the public utilities commission on gray water pr

that is green. >> right. >> hotels are going green. restaurants are going green. any kind of manufacturing they are relooking at how to manufacture so anything from logistics, bringing the materials and supplies to the right place to manufacture and also be policy and advocacy and education marketing sales. all of those nontechnical jobs are also going to be available. some of them are needed right now to create shape -- create and shape the policies we were talking about before, but as companies get bigger, any company that is going to make it needs a good solid management team. >> what about training. i love solar. i think it is great. i want to get it. i can't afford it, but i would love to work in it. into train for that do you have to go someplace and take a course and pay money out or will there be apprentice time and ways to be trained on the job? they know i can't afford college but i could be working for them in smaller ways as i work my way up. >> generally what we're seeing people are having to get some training on their own and then that will be enhanc

green. >> my own direct experience, generally, the buying public will not pay more if it is green. maybe that is something people don't want to hear. it is the honest truth. that is my own direct experience. i think it is absolutely -- what will happen with the current green movement in building, is that it will become standard. it is becoming the standard. ultimately, it will be frowned upon when a house does not have these features, i think. i think that is how it will migrate into society, in that way. it is a good thing. it is becoming an awareness of all of these things, your appliances, your window rating, things like that. it is something that happens over time. people like to talk about it. i have sold properties where they are solar-ready, which means they have all of the equipment installed to bring the solar down, the solar energy from the roof, down into the sub-area, to then transmitted to the electrical outlets and things, but the panel did not get installed yet because maybe the person did not want to spend the extra $20,000 or $30,000. it is a promise it is coming.

there are three categories along the blue green light. there are existing plans and policies that affect the entire system. there are existing plans and policies that were developed through neighborhood plans, and then, there are existing community plans that were developed throughout the length of the system, so we reviewed all of those documents, summarized all those elements that are pertinent to the blue- green way, and included that summary within the document we prepared. as well as looking at the existing conditions, we wanted to look at what the resources of open spaces are that are out there today, not only along the blue green light, but within half a mile so that we could identify what types of deficiencies might exist and how new carts might be able to fill those efficiency gaps. to help organize the blue green way, approximately 13 miles long, we tried to divide it into three sub-areas. the no. sub area, which is from mission creek is lace creek, and includes mission bay and the central waterfront and illinois street. the cen

there are many aspects to being green >> what lead you to this green office? >> it's an interesting story. these kinds of thing start with gee, it's time to find a new office of our idea has evolved over time. how do we work together? what kind of space do we want that will support what we want? we have very ambitious goals. all those things started to factor in. we had a brain storm session and made it clear, it's not an ideal world, we are not going to be able to get all the things they like. we ask people to prioritize and across the board, the staff said they want a sustainable office. it's a leed silver and we got excited it went to leed gold >> wow. so leed has a series of standards. starting with leed certified. you have met a high level the sustainability. you can go to leed silver or gold. it's leadership of environmental design. it's a process of the u.s. green building council. beverly is ahead of this curve. we see every new building as sustainable features. they are not all leed certified. that's what the market demands >> our work is in the publi

what we ended up doing with the california green building code was bring in into our previous green building chapter, 13c, the environmental concerns chapter, and bring forward those more restrictive provisions in the state code -- and there were many -- and as well integrating our own green building code. that was done with a great help of the department of the environment, contracts with held on consultants. months and months, half a dozen hearings, public hearings on the green building code. it will make some differences in san francisco. it will make it more difficult and expensive to build certain types of buildings but the state said you must do it. it is interesting, and a green building stuff is happening so fast, everybody getting up to speed, it is almost standard practice now for most construction types, these days. the other big change in the code is the residential. the state, for the first time, and then did something called the international residential code, irc, and it applies to one and two-family dwellings. they adopted the code because many small towns and cities around t
