the greensburg sit-in began on february 1, 1960. early that morning four well-dressed african-americans again dressed in respectable clothing, exemplars of black respectability, set out to desegregate restaurants by sitting in. black people were welcomed to shop at woolworth's but not dine at the lunch counter. making this a painful sight of white supremacy. the sit-in was not spontaneous, it was everything but. it was me tick lusly planned and executed. they were aware of the current changes flowing through the south. at 4:30 in the afternoon, the students entered woolworth's and sat at the lunch counter. they received no service that day but sat quietly until the store closed that day. word spread. the next day more students joined them. soon black women students from bennett college and a few white students joined the protest. bennett college students, i should add, were integral. they served as foot soldiers by providing picketers, marchers, and carpools and replacement protesters. here are two images of bennett college students
