greg, i want to start with you. you heard tom talk about the search, how difficult it is going to be. when you look at the location of where that debris might be, what does it tell you about what may have happened to that plane? >> kristen, it gives us some optimistic, you know, optimism, if you will, but there's got to be caution there. we've gone through this exercise before when the chinese found what they thought was debris and had a picture from satellite. we won't know what this wreckage tells us, if it is an airplane part. we won't know until we're able to examine it. it could give us clues as to the type of impact, whether it was a high speed impact or just the aircraft breaking up as it was trying to be put down possibly intentionally in the water. but again, it's very difficult to make any anything out of any of these pieces until they are in fact identified as aircraft parts. >> michael, what do you make of the location where this search is now taking place? >> i think once again, as greg and others have

i want to start with you, greg. what happens next? what do the search teams today hope to accomplish? >> hopefully, abby, the weather clears up. that's the biggest problem right now is trying to get those airborne assets into the area and low enough to be able to get high resolution pictures. if they find this floating debris. they still haven't found it. we saw it on the satellite. but those were four day old pictures. so they're going to have to try to find those pieces of debris first. then see if they can get close enough to give us at least some high resolution pictures so that we can at least attempt to identify whether or not they're from an airplane or some junk that's floating out there in the indian ocean. >> well, that's exactly right, jeff. as we were talking before the show, we're happy. we're hopeful when we find pieces of debris in the area that could be where they were flying to, where they happened to fly to with the autopilot. but this debris could be anything. it could have nothing to do with this plane. and even if

we're joined again tonight by greg faith, former air safety director with the national transportation safety board. also a veteran pilot. he is in daytona beach, florida. greg, i know we risked getting into the loop of the cause, but let's walk through what we just heard there. the plane sending signals hours after it goes off radar. the transponder we're told it has to be manually clicked off. is this looking less and less to appear that it is not an accident? >> exactly, lester. that's one of the first things that three days ago when they weren't finding wreckage in that search area, that really started to concern me. and then when the evidence started to come forth with the military radar, the facts that the airplane had made a u-turn, that was really suspicious. and when i think back at silkair and some of the things that were taking place, you had to look at out of the ordinary, if you will. that is what really got me interested in the fact that this was an intentional act and not an accident. >> and i'm painfully aware the pilots are not here to defend themselves, you mentioned

greg, thank you for joining us. do you believe the images we see now late today are showing us the plane's wreckage? >> based on the resolution of the images i'm skeptical at this point. normally if you have pieces of aircraft or pieces this large you would expect to see a large debris field. because this is a very large piece or pieces of aircraft. so you would expect to see not only the 70-foot by 72-foot piece of structure if this is an airplane, but all the debris that would go with it. seat cushions, seats, the water is not that deep there. >> what you're saying is you're not banking on it. so in fact if this is not the wreckage and the plane did in fact make a turn as we heard earlier today just heard from tom costello could we possibly be looking at a criminal investigation here? >> i think that still has to be considered given the fact that we have had varying information in the last five days. nothing has been confirmed. and the stuff that we thought was confirmed, some of the information has been basically

greg is joining me now. greg, with a welcome. we don't have a clue what happened to the plane. do investigators begin? what are they doing at this point? >> really, alex, the investigation is just getting under way. they will get all the information that malaysia air has as far as the dispatch paperwork, what cargo was being carried, possibly the manifest to find out if there were folks on board. one of the things you have to look at as an investigator is look at the accident side of it. was there something that went wrong with the aircraft? then, again, you have to look at the intentional act, the levels of terrorism. you can't rule anything in or out at this point. >> yeah. what are the challenges, the biggest ones facing investigators? is it just not having information? >> that's absolutely correct. if you remember air france 447, there was some telemetry data used before the airplane was lost and it took time to recover. in this instance, there's no information about whether or not the airline has any of that telemetry data. the air traffic controllers got a routine report
