greg has held this position since january. during its tenure the committee has drafted legislation on the opioid crisis, self driving vehicles and the modernization of the food and drug administration. recently the committee was in the national news as mark zuckerberg among others faced questions about internet privacy and consumer protection. since coming to congress -- before coming to congress, senator walden served in the organ say legislature and owned and operated several radio stations and is still an amateur radio operator. he and his wife reside in oregon. it is my privilege to hand over the podium to chairman walden. thank you very much, don, for putting this together and inviting us to be here. thank you for your wonderful service. how about a round of applause? butll probably be brief probably longer than you, greg. forgive me. elected, myirst predecessor was jim howard, the chairman of the public works and transportation committee. in my district the summer before, i was a state senator. i don't know if there's is anybody from new york but all the garbage from new york used to be sent on ships and ended up off the jersey shore and all the garbage would wash up on to the new jersey beaches. jim was a big part of trying to clean up and protect the beaches. when i was elected i said i will need john -- jim howard. when i was elected i got on the public works and transportation committee. i was so proud to be with jim howard. i went for a month and it was the most boring thing you could possibly imagine. all they did was talk about what roads they would build and what trains they would buy. i started to say, i can't take this anymore. i started to search around and bite ended up going to the energy and commerce hearings, just sitting in the audience and listening to the committee. the first day i walked into th

greg: that's the big question.hat we are seeing is positive earnings news on the back of fairly positive tax cuts and encouraging momentum in terms of economic growth. the have to be wary that these tariffs have only gradually started to be implemented. as more and more are implemented, then we will see more and more uncertainty on the business front and more and more increases in inflationary bessures, and all that will generally negative for the economy. i would expect largely to see more negative earnings data coming into the third quarter, rather than the second quarter. interesting thing they been happening is donald trump saying we will support the farmers, but also in china, they are saying we will support our domestic manufacturers. these shields, so to speak, or coming up. how much support will they give, or is it just something for the short -- for the short-term? greg: what we are seeing with the farm aid from the u.s. administration is something that is a little bit surprising, innocence. the u.s. admin

. >> very important question, greg. and i spent a lot of time on this in my book. i think barack obama obviously had a different point of vow with bibi netanyahu not on the fundamental relationship with israel. we provided more support for security than any administration in history but on two principle issues. how to deal with iran and its nuclear program and how to deal with the palestinians. and, you know, we supported a two-state solution to the israel/pal's teen conflict and ultimately were unable to make any progress there. it obviouslies with a failure of our administration. but i think the reality is that when you don't have parties that are willing to take big risks, as former israeli leaders did, then there's only so far you can get. on iran, i think it really had to do with do we believe that you can resolve this issue diplomatically, of the nuclear progra program. >> poses limitations on their nuclear program. i think at the end of the day, prime minister netanyahu did not want to see that diplomacy go forwa
