here is greg bledsoe. >> these mushy waters lined the coast of california. there are important. they protect us from flooding and erosion. but right now, we are facing that all of this could one day disappear. the campus extends all the way down there. >> we are basically on the edge of silicon valley. >> reporter: home to some of the most valuable companies in the worl right across the street from some of california's most vulnerable land. >> i do not want to see us lose our coastal marshes. the more we study them, the more important we realize this is for protecting our coast. i'm a professor of geography. you know, they provide sort of a barrier between storm surges and title surges. marshes are often thought of as a sponge. they observed that force and slow it down and diffuse it. they protect our roads, our communities. everything. here is the problem. what if the entire sponge were underwater? global sea level is rising. it's accelerating. that threatens to drown these vegetated coastal wetlands. >> of these disappear someday? >> we did a study with the u.s. geological sur
