correspondent greg burke is live if rome where it's just after midnight. greg? >> reporter: bret, you know, italy is the euro zone third largest economy. today it came awfully close to joining that club of countries which has had to ask for bail-outs. that is because the skyrockets are dangerously high. they sent the borrowing rates up over 7% today. that has been a magic number for other countries. marked a point of no return for them. ireland, portugal and greece. at that point all found borrowing too expensive and had to ask for bail-outs. italy's turmoil not only has euro zone nervous but the global economy with the markets getting hammered. head of the international monetary fund say we should look at what we call a lost decade economically. losing the majority in parliament, the italian prime minister silvio berlusconi said he would resign once italy passed important reform legislation. the reformats will be controversial because of what they entail. george napolitano in an attempt to calm markets promised legislation would be passed in days. berlusconi is

jon: keeping eye on all of this is our greg burke. he is live for us right now from rome. greg? >> reporter: hi, jon, that's right. well, it's not over yet in greece but certainly the attention is shifting toward italy. it is a much bigger country. italy's problems potentially much worse for all of europe and for all the global economy. the number one difficulty for italy right now is skyrocketing rate for borrowing money. it is getting dangerous close to that point which a country has to ask for help. that is for a bailout. that borrowing no longer makes sense. italy is the eurozone's third largest economy. it doesn't want to be put in the same situation as those weak links, greece, ireland and portugal which alled that to ask for bailouts. the man on the hot seat, silvio berlusconi is under a lot of pressure to resign. he has been in power for three-and-a-half nears. he could be gone in 3 1/2 hours, 3 1/2 days, we'll see. could be sometime between those. you never know with berlusconi as he tries to win back party members who jumped ship. there will be a big test in a vote in

greg burk is streaming live from rome with more on that. >> reporter: that's right.e really watching italy closely today as it moves into the post-berlusconi area, and it's all about business as they're watching those numbers and what they're doing. lots of weight on the shoulders of mario monty. he's supposed to be a nonpolitical figure, sort of above the fray, but he's very much in the plett call negotiations -- political negotiations today and tomorrow meeting with all the party leaders, trying to come up with a cabinet that everybody can agree to. that's not always an easy thing to do in italy, and that's only the first hurdle for mario monty. it's going to be an uphill battle all the way. once he does have a government in place, all of italy's problems will now be monty's problems. the government's going to have to tackle that huge debt and also the fact that the country's growth is, essentially, at a standstill. now, for his part silvio berlusconi stepped down over the weekend as prime minister, but he vows to fight on. berlusconi is what many people describe a
