♪ susan: greg francis, you have a new book out called "just harvest." what is it story? eg: this is a story that depicts the plight of black farmers in america in a landmark case and a following case. it dealt with systemic discrimination by the usda against black farmers that decimated the population of black farmers, contributed to them leaving the farms as well as losing land and the familiar structure -- the familial structure that goes along with being a farmer. susan: what were the years of these cases? greg: this case dealt with discrimination between 1981 and 1996. the usda had a program or has programs where they go out and give farmers supplements, sometimes for seeds or whatnot. this dealt with the denial of farmers during that time to get the same type of support they were giving to the white farmers. susan: how large was the settlement? greg: the settlement in this portion of the case was $1.25 billion. susan: how many farmers collected from that? greg: there were almost 20,000 farmers or their descendants who ultimately were able to reap the benefits of this
