greg brown. greg? [ applause ] >> thank you, general, thanks to all of you for joining us to celebrate the opening of the only museum dedicated to telling the story of u.s. law enforcement from its triumphs and struggles to its daily work in serving our communities and keeping them safe. this is a story that i and the thousands of people at motorola that i represent care about very, very deeply because this is what our company is about. it is our fundamental mission to serve the men and women in blue. on a personal and family note, i want to thank and acknowledge two of my nephews in law enforcement in new jersey who came down this morning, officer sam maronowic and officer dave sabtowski from the police department in new jersey. [ applause ] so for motorola it started 90 years ago when we adapted the very first car radio for use in a police car and today we work hand in hand with over 100,000 such customers around the world. now, 16 years ago, 16 years ago, craig floyd approached our company about becoming the first founding partner for the museum. we knew it was the right thing to do because this is what we do. we first helped with the construction of this beautiful building and then expanded our investment with additional financial support, supporting the 911 exhibit and donating our technology for day-to-day museum operations. today i'm honored and humbled to be a part of this historic occasion of opening the museum who gives the men and women who protect our communities the recognition they deserve and that helps build a bridge of understanding and respect between law enforcement and the citizens they serve. now it's my distinct privilege to introduce our honored guest, commissioner chuck ramsey, who has nearly 50 years of knowledge, experience, and service in advancing the law enforcement profession in three different major city police departments. he joined the police department in my hometown, his native chicago, as an 18-year-old cadet and rose to deputy superintendent. he served the chicago police department for 30 years. he then became chief of police for the metropolitan police department for the district of columbia in 1998, and ten years ago, he became police commissioner in philadelphia until retiring a couple years ago. commissioner ramsey has been an enthusiastic leader in the effort to build this museum and as a member of the museum advisory committee personally helped develop some of the museum exhibits. with his deep experience as an internationally recognized police practitioner and educator, he has a unique perspective on the museum's mission that has been invaluable to the development process. he currently is a member of the museum's leadership council, which oversees all aspects of this museum. commissioner ramsey is known for his results in reducing crime in all three cities he served. he oversaw and participated in numerous high-profile investigations, such as the sandra levy murder investigation, the washington, d.c., sniper, that went on for three or four weeks, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 2001 anthrax attacks. in 2007, he served on the independent commission on security forces of iraq and led a prominent group of law enforcement professionals that traveled across iraq to review the state of iraqi police forces for a report that was ultimately submitted to congress. in 2014, he served as co-chair of president obama's task force on 21st century policing. he's the past president of the police executive research forum and the major city chiefs association. he currently lectures and consults globally and serves as a law enforcement analyst for cnn. ladies and gentlemen, please welcome one of the very, very best leaders in the history of law enforcement and my friend, commissioner chuck ramsey. [ applause ] >> well thank you. it's really an honor to be here. you know, when gregn i looked out in the crowd and i saw my good friend ray kelly, he's older than me. anyway, this is such an honor and a long time coming. there's one individual that i have to acknowledge because it's his vision and that's craig floyd. craig -- [ applause ] i've been coming here for close to 20 years to pay tribute and honor to the men and women that have made the ultimate sacrifice giving their lives in service to others, and that's how i got to know craig. unfortunately, in my career, there are about 25 names inscribed on that wall, people that i worked with, people that i came to know, people that i will never, ever forget. i just want to thank you, craig, for all you do to keep their memories alive, but also what you do in terms of taking care of their families, letting them know that they will never, ever be forgotten. so again, thank you so much for that.
