first of all, in the meantime, bring in our colleague, greg palkot, senior affairs correspondent. in lviv this morning. greg, another development today which is we saw an attack on an assault in the central city of nipro. i wonner what the significance there is? >> it's yet another rueb con, the russian military to get control of ukraine. this is a fairly major city, maybe the fourth largest in ukraine. more important, though, it is centrally located between northern cities, like kyiv, the southern regions, like crimea, and it still has not been hit until friday -- friday was the first time. the overall thinking, benning militia, is what the military can do, the russian military could come up and come down from both sides and basically call -- create a barrier, a line of defense using the nipa river which that city is on and other cities are on. and isolate the ukrainian military on east side of the country, basically cut them off from supplies, cut them off from connections with the western part of the country. if that is successful, that will do a lot to hinder the effectiveness

and i want to come back now and throw to our colleague greg palkot who's in the western city of lviv.he cruise missile attack there may have serious ramifications. greg, you were able to get near that base today. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, benjamin, i can tell you that the war here in ukraine just got a bit harder and a bit wider with big ramifications for all those involved in the conflict. take a look at what we saw, what we heard today. western ukrainian town early this morning just about 2 miles behind us was the deadly russian missile strike which hit the military base there. it's a place that american special forces and florida national guard were at last month. and we're also just 10 miles down the road from nato ally poland. thirty russian missiles were fired, eight hit their mark turning the military training center into a scene of death and destruction. 35 people were killed, 134 injured. locals told us they couldn't believe it. >> translator: we woke up to the bombings. we saw the flash of lights, the huge missiles and explosions. >> reporter: the ukrainian mi
