joining me is greg smith, associate director of research at the pew research center with in its mostent findings on the secularist trend, found unaffiliateamericans becoming even more secular. what does that mean? >> it means you're seeing some very big changes staying place in the religious landscape. growing number of people who say they don't rng define themselves with religion groups less thrieblg say religion plays a role in their lives or that pray regularly. what's happening, because this group is becoming less religious as it grows, it's tugging down on the nation's overall rates of religious observance. that's why we're seeing modest declines in the share of americans who are highly religious. >> so if we had talked to these nones in years past, when a greater percentage of them did not report being as secular as they are, how would they be different? would they have been adults who were raised attending religious services but choose not to now, people who have had families and parents who were religiously observant but not now? help me understand that. >> number 1 most of t

let's talk about this study with pew's associate director of research, gregory smith. gregascinating study. so many things to talk about. but i find it astounding that the democratic party's biggest reli religious group is people who reject religion. how did the democratic party get to the place. >> the nones are growing within the public as a whole. in fact, the fastest growing religious group in the united states, almost a quarter of all adults in the united states say they have no religion. they're growing among both parties but especially among democrats. now more numerous than catholics, members of the historically black protestant tradition, more numerous than main line protestants within the democratic coalition. a big change. >> the american people, by and large, without question, a people of faith, more so than other comparable industrialized nations. but, we are becoming less and less religious as a public, why? >> exactly right. it's important to keep in mind that by any measure the united states is still a nation of believers, but we're seeing small but signific

greg is a terrific writer, show runner, so on. they brought the pitch in, which means, you know, you get a call from a studio and -- smith warner brothersd everybody has come in and prepared for weeks in advance and they're there to tell you a story, introduce you to the character, the pilot story, what other characters are in the show, and we listen. >> rose: we is you and -- myself and the drama department at the time and we began to hear the story of the character in supergirl and what we heard was a story of coming of age, someone whoa would realize her capacity. i fell in love. this kind of character is not on television. if you rook at other female heroins on cbs she's like a younger version of those characters. >> rose: you like it so far. what do you do next? >> what i do, at that moment, they get to a particular scene in the story, and i welled up. it was emotional, i started to cry, because it was about a mother -- one scene was about a mother telling her daughter how much she believed in her and how much her dream was for her to realize her potential. i personalized it and i was touched and i bought it in the room and i said,

greg hardy. >> reporter: ray rice who knocked his fiancee unconscious in. >> it shouldn't take photos to understand the severity of domestic violence. it happens every eight seconds. >> reporter: even espn host stephen a. smith, who stood up for hardy in the past, he had enough. >> when i saw those pictures for the first time friday, i said, my god, why is this guy in the nfl? >> reporter: on saturday, hardy tweeted, i express my regret for what happened in the past but mostly i am grateful for the opportunity to play in nfl. the nfl, which has had access to the photos and other evidence in the case, suspended hardy for ten games in april. it was later to reduced to four games by an arbitrator. last july, hardy was convicted of assault by a north carolina judge but the case fell apart on appeal because holder stopped cooperating with prosecutors. they believe she received a civil settlement from hardy. the charges have now been expunged from hardy's record. >> so no, justice wasn't done. he seems to have bought his way out. that is what the evidence suggests. >> reporter: now cowboys owner jerry jones says he does not condone domestic violence and had not seen the photos before they were punished but blished
