[applause] >> chief suhr has surfed in the department for 30 years. and as chief he will be overseeing a department of 1,800 police officers. next we have peter herley who is now acting as police consultant. he is the former chief of police of tiburon and the former president of the california police officers association. next to mr. herley is sharon wu, the chief assistant of operations in the district attorney's office. she oversees the criminal division, including the victim witness program and the alternative dispute courts. anne irwin is an attorney in the public defender's office. ms. irwin was recently involved in several of the cases involving the videotaped evidence which resulted in the dismissal of over 90 cases. you've read about those in the newspaper. and finally, we have civil rights attorney john burress. he specializes in civil actions brought against police officers for abuse of power, brutality, and wrongful death. le

[applause] >> welcome. i really appreciate everyone being here. in my administration, we do not do a lot of press conferences, but this is really important. october is domestic violence awareness month. it was a major priority of mine and the mayor's to make an impression that we have to take care of our most vulnerable. we will open one is to be the special victims unit in the san francisco police department for the first time where we consolidate the domestic violence units, a juvenile, human trafficking, missing persons, elder abuse and neglect, financial abuse, and sex crimes into one unit. over the next few years, we will go through a huge transition in the police department. some of our most experienced officers will be retiring. we want to make sure we do not lose their expertise and their ability to work with the advocates to make the most successful prosecutions possible for those who would victimize our most vulnerable. often the victims come with children. we wanted to have a warm space that was secure. i think when you find your way in

commissioners know that i want to commend san francisco police department, in particular, chief greg suhr, who was my captain at the baby station. we had a great working relationship. cap -- captain corrales, as well as the current captain. in particular, this is something that many people do not experience, and i hope they do not experience, on june 6, 2011, there was a shooting in front of my house, and it happened at 10:00 a.m., and their two bullet holes in my garage door. there was a man who was severely injured as a result of the shooting, and ironically, 10:00 is the time i am usually leaving, and it was in the direct line of sight of where my automobile is as they go to my car. the only thing that was indifferent as i checked a couple e-mails as i heard the gunshots ring out, and it sounded like it came out of my garage. so when i heard what appeared to be some running in my building, i did what any american would do, stayed in my house and waited until i heard the police sirens. the long and short of it was when i went outside, everything was calm. there were police from the miss
