tom: joining us for more is bloomberg's greg sullivan. greg, did the talks make any progress? what was the outcome of this meeting between rubio and sergei lavrov? >> well, they were short on details at the end of the meeting but russian leaders quick to hail the talks as a success. the u.s. also seemed to signal that progress was made. of course we heard from president trump he still expects to meet putin possibly as soon as before the end of the month. what we're likely to see next would be progress toward any kind of leader summit and additional contacts. it is important to note that zelenskyy was not at a table and as party to the conflict his input will be essential to any resolution going forward. for now what we have sphreen the u.s. site is talk of potentially sanctions relief at the future but rubio saying it won't happen until a deal is reached. boosting embassy staff which has been dwindling amid the deterioration in relations between the u.s. and russia. those are the main things we have taken away. tom: macron, european leaders looking to host another meeting. he

for more, let's bring in bloomberg's greg sullivan. we know u.s. and russian officials are going to meeting -- to be meeting. what do we know about the possibility of the summit happening and what will be discussed? >> well, one thing we do know is that the trump team does appear to be moving very fast. he has been in office less than a month and already, there are senior advisers flying to meet russian senior advisers. it seems like these preparations are made. we know they would like to have a meeting potentially by the end of the month. so these officials are meeting in saudi arabia to try to hash that out and we know that europeans expressed worry about this with the initial phone call where they agreed to begin meeting. a lot of europeans were taken aback and they worry that ukraine and europe might not be at the table in the way they feel they need to to hash out any sort of resolution or cease-fire. >> yes. well, stay with us because i just want to bring you some comments from the german chancellor, olaf scholz. he spoke to bloomberg exclusi

tom: let's bring in bloomberg's russia economy and government editor, greg sullivan, with context. re the champagne corks popping on moscow at this point? greg: well, the mood in moscow certainly is shocked right now. the kremlin was taken aback by both the speed and harshness of trump's comments. in many ways, this exceeds their expectations of what they hoped for in bringing the u.s. to their view on the war, but caution remains, even as they are happy about what they are seeing. they are very cautious. russian officials don't understand trump's negotiating strategy. they worry about potential traps down the road and also trump is a famously minor -- mercurial person and could change stands quickly so they are trying to analyze and understand how is this white house operating, what lies ahead and what is the negotiating strategy, even as they are happy with what they are seeing. tom: happy but was a sense of caution. meanwhile, we are getting more detail on how european leaders are looking to fill the gap when it comes to defense across europe and for ukraine. what do we know abou
