greg sur has appointed i think one of the best of the command staff of the entire police department to be the lead for the sfmta. you will hear from the commander shortly. we have an outstanding working relationship with the police department to the commander, and what we have done is we have fought together. really a lot of our safety enforcement portfolio -- we have brought together really a lot of our safety enforcement portfolio. as well, and his traffic enforcement, fare enforcement, parking enforcement -- it is traffic enforcement. she is also assisting with traffic issues. really everything safety enforcement related brought together under her leadership, which i think is really moving the ball forward. i think you will see in her presentation or our chief officer, some of the statistics showing that some of these efforts are bearing fruit. we do have some problem areas that you will hear about as well, but i think we have very good, focused leadership, and we have the entire executive team of the mta aligned with the goal of safety as the number one priority of supporting them

we had a chance to sit down with a police chief greg sur on friday. >> he's been a long time department head in the police department. elevated to chief. and the first thing he has to deal with is occupy in san francisco's long tradition of dealing with pro protest. there's the question of what you do an don't do. where is the first amendment and where does it end. what are the rules for officer when dealing with rallies and protesters. here's what he had to say. >> we've always been a town that deals with first amendment rights and that's just who we are. but that does not condone criminal activity. we're not going to wade into a crowd of 20 or 30,000 people to try to arrest people that create a largest event. >> he saved me. >> how. >> people in wheelchairs climbed out and walked in front of city hall. he was in charge. he said, i don't think you want to do that. >> that would be a great photo. >> that would have been good. >> and being a great mayor, he defers. >> and resented it to this day. >> when you go into demonstrations, the whole world really is watching. what goes through th

[applause] >> thank you.first of all, i want to echo what the mayor said and wish everyone a happy new year. i am told that the year of the dragon is the luckiest year. so, here we go. with a little bit of luck, we can follow up on last year. crime was down last year, violent crime, and we want to keep that trend going. the crimes that surrounded the lunar new year last year were down over 50%. we have 11 reports of extortion in 2010, and we only had five reported from the gang task force. it would be great if this year, the year of the dragon, we have none. we can do that through cooperation, working together, and everyone giving us the information we need to make sure everyone is safe and no one has to give up anything that works so hard for. when that language assistance available. if anyone speak another language from english. many, many languages are represented. please, please, use these resources to work with the police department. be as a community. we are all in this together. it's at the very safest

san francisco police chief greg sur says 70 fugitives were rounded up. most of the arrests were made in the tenderloin. mostly for felonies. chief sur says there were 40 fugitives they were unable to track down but there will be more operations like this one in the future. >>> our ktvu crew went along during the crack down. police say they arrested 11 prostitutes during the operation. one of them just 16 years old. police say the city of oakland has been identified by the fbi as a hub for human trafficking. >> we also have to focus our efforts on the internet trafficking as well. you have girl's photos that are being posted and coming into hotels and oakland and other bay area cities being exploited as well. >> police say the under cover bust not only helped less cue girls but improved the quality of life in the neighborhoods. after making arrests police introduced the prostitutes to advocates that can get them help. >>> mountain view may become the latest bay area city to ban single use plastic bags. the city council voted to draft a work plan to ban si
