greg suskin, eyewitness news. >> greg, thank you. are asking for peace after a police officer shot and killed a suspect who was running away. the officer is white. the suspect, black. eyewitness news reporter mark becker is live at the scene in raleigh where a crowd is gathering tonight. mark? >> reporter: erica, there was a steady stream of people to be honest coming to downtown raleigh where the 24-year-old was shot and killed yesterday. there is a little tension here but not over the top, and there are questions as to why he was shot and whether the officer who shot him could face charges. red balloons and flowers frame the makeshift memorial to 24- year-old aquil denkins. police say that officers were trying to serve him with a warrant when he ran and they found a gun close to his body but that hasn't begun to answer the questions here. >> is one is running away, that is not a license to kill. >> reporter: today with denkins' mother standing beside him and wiping away tears, they called for a complete and transparent investigatio

eyewitness news reporter greg suskin broke the story, and we'll find out how it was all uncovered. >> reporter: the sheriff's reaction upon hearing this was disbelief. dominiece white oversaw all inmates in the detention center. witness statements led to an investigation and her charges. standard and we mess up, we'll hold ourselves accountable. >> reporter: we went by white's house to ask her about it but no one came to the door. outside the jail and courthouse, some called the arrest disappointing. >> i just think that's terrible, like the people are supposed to look up to her. >> i think it's bad to be a leader in a community to do that. >> reporter: white's record shows a disorderly conduct conviction in 2009, starting a 50 benefit she was a detention officer. the case still under investigation but couldn't say if there were other incidents or show us what the video shows. >> we found out about it and jumped on it quickly and did what we had to do. >> reporter: a boyfriend of white's told me the allegations are not true and declined comment. department want to talk about it either

tonight, eyewitness news reporter greg suskin is in and asking what happens next? >> reporter: and nine of the 11 officers sworn to protect the city of pageland were not on the job after police chief brown was told he could come back. patrol cars sit parked and people in the town want to know what's going on. >> i'm hoping that when it comes out, it's the truth and not rumors. >> reporter: it hasn't come out yet. but town hall released a statement saying they couldn't comment on personnel issues but wanted to assure residents that appropriate law enforcement presence is maintained. those steps have forced chesterfield county sheriffs deputies to take over law enforcement. >> just never seen a police department just walk out. >> reporter: now, the sheriff is calling in extra deputies to cover despite having to patrol >> we are going to continue stlongz takes, weeks, a month, a year. >> reporter: the drama came after the town downs reinstated brown last night. he was on leave while a sled investigation continued, the details of which were not given out publically. >>

eyewitness news reporter greg suskin is on the phone now and greg, you say this is the worst crash site you've ever seen. >> well, it's certainly one of seen. not just because of the fatalities but the tremendous damage in the road. if you look at this area. highway 9. it's an area that's extremely rural. the majority of the afternoon. troopers told me around 8:00 this morning, a van was going west on highway 9. it crossed the center line and hit that log truck head on. it's in an area called dead man's curve because of the number of accidents out there in the past. both drivers were killed. pronounced dead on the scene. there were no passengers. when firefighters got on scene, they told me the van was engulfed in flames. it was incinerated. you couldn't tell what vehicle that was. it took them a while to find the driver. he was ejected from the van. because of the debris, damage from the fire, and the logs in the road. it's going to take several hours to clean this up. the majority of the afternoon. it's a rural area. but pretty populated with truck traffic. so they've got a detour set

. >> new tonight reporter greg suskin spoke exclusively to the girlfriend of the man who was killed and she told him she was afraid for her life. greg. >> reporter: that's right linda jones says she and her boyfriend dennis penny had been camping out since saturday and he choked her and punched her kill her and she heard gunfire when deputies shot him. >> i was just trying to be a good girlfriend and do everything he asked me to do. >> reporter: when we found linda jones she was shaken and says she and dennis penny with camping here at this spot on drew it's falls lake and fasting and he got angry when she had a sewed after a -- soda after three days breaking the fast and he hit and choked her and she wanted to leave. >> i am scared. so i was planning on leaving and should have left earlier but, i can't swim and it was dark. >> reporter: when anson county deputies arrived one stayed with her at the tent site and two others kyle beam and josh confronted him and penny exchanged gunfire and both deputies shot him. jones says she warned deputies he had a gun and heard the shots. >>i don't k

eyewitness news reporter greg suskin learned it's become a common problem. >> reporter: utility crews began working on this problem over night. if you look on sandy porter road, you can see they're still working back there. just finishing up this long process. what started this? other crews installing new technology. neighbors in the steel chase community lost water service around 5:00 yesterday afternoon. brady gonzales says it was a rough night. speak we can't use the bathroom. there's no water to drink. there's nothing. >> more than 100 homes had their water cut off after a contractor for at&t dug into the line that runs along sandy porter road. fiber lines when they made the mistake. we've been reporting on these incidents for months. we told you about a contractor for google. that damaged a natural gas line effecting homes in the highland creek neighborhood of north charlotte. contractors often hit gas, phone, and water lines, even if their location is marked. the city did bring in bottled water yesterday and today. some families took action themselves. >> we went to my brothers

new tonight, eyewitness news reporter greg suskin says police may all ready have a suspect. greg? >> reporter: cmpd arson investigators interviewed students in the presence of their parents who could be responsible for this. but cms says for a real situation that wasn't a drill hitch but not all parents see it that way. more than 500 students at walter g buyers school were barreling in class this morning when they suddenly found themselves outside. >> we do have an intentionally set fire in one of the restrooms in the school. >> firefighters say school staff had put it out before they arrived but they sent in crews to ventilate the halls, opening doors and using large phones. cms says they sent students home on the advice of firefighters who had concerns about lingering smoke and smoke damage in the halls. as soon as calls and emails went out to parents nay quickly lined up in the parking lot for an early pick up. most had no idea the fire in the bathroom was arson. >> i'm upset though. how did the fire start? who started the fire. >> i don't know what happened. >> tracy rivera ca

greg suskin found out what happened when officers searched the home. >> they went in, first police found the body of tj price jr. in the bed room of that home as they were moving along to search other rooms they heard a gunshot coming from another bed room they were approaching. family members and friends filled connor street for hours awaiting any word on what left two people dead here. >> i still can't believe it. even though i'm standing right here. >> she's a cousin to the shot and killed by his stepfather, 48-year-old barack early this morning. it happened in their home after the family had been out together last night. >> it's a tragic loss. i feel like we've lost one of the good ones. >> the family moved here from great falls five months ago when their home there caught fire and police told me they had no prior calls here about this family. tyrell hayes was with price hours before he died. a man who he says always encouraged him. >> i looked at him as a big brother. he'd give me money and anything i needed. >> he seemed upset last night and acted strangely but they didn't know why

today, eyewitness news reporter greg suskin has more. >> reporter: surveillance video shows this guy pulling up in his truck and forces open the gate, cuts the chain, drives through and did all of that in front of this security camera and at least half a dozen others. >> this is somebody who just does not care. >> reporter: that's obvious by the number of cameras that spot this guy, light -- lighting a cigarette right in front of the camera. >> he didn't try and cover his face. >> reporter: the storage owner said he didn't care would saw him towing a 36-foot camper. and it was 6:30 in the morning on march 5 when the video shows that the suspect cut the chain on the electronic gate and pushed it open. minutes to grab the trailer and let him go. >> reporter: the same man in a dodge pickup stole a 33-foot trailer, and this time in rock hill, he cut the fence and drove out at 10:00 in the morning. we went by to talk to the owners but no one was hurt. it appears that the suspect did take a precaution of covering his license plate. >> normally, people who did this don't stop until we make

we're live in north charlotte, greg suskin, channel 9 eyewitness news. >>> happening now, a group against charlotte's non- discrimination ordinance is government building. there's 25 protesters there now. the ordinance that goes into effect april 1st bans discrimination against the lgbt in various places. eyewitness news reporter jim bradley is live where a protester is asking the governor and the general assembly to stop the ordinance. >> ever since city council members voted to expand the anti discrimination ordinance, this issue exploded in controversy all over the state. supporters have been vocal over the last few week. opponents are taking their turn outside the government center. several dozen people gathering saying they want to ask the governor to call a special session in the legislature to ordinance. republicans in control in raleigh are working on legislation that would strike down the bathroom portion of the ordinance and keep other cities from around the state enacting laws similar to charlottes. the protesters want to make it 1st. >> that's why we're out here. to get the go

buckle road has been known as dead mans curve for years and tonight our eye wilt news reporter greg suskin asked officials what changes they could make. >> reporter: an american flag waves from the spot where two lost their lives. clover police officer tanner davis is mike's son. he says his father only drove local trucking routes so he could be home every night. >> i don't remember him missing a football game or spelling bee. we were best friends. >> reporter: he plans to speak before chester county council hoping that possible changes to the road could save lives. this tragedy led to someone else being helped or saved, that would help him rest easier. >> reporter: the crash two weeks ago caused the van he was driving to burst into flames and logs fell from davis' truck and were thrown across the road. you can see the mark where the burning van came to rest. >> i heard the loudest explosion i have ever heard in my life. >> reporter: some say inattentive drivers cause the crashes, not the highway. >> it was on my side more than their side. i had to hit the shoulder of the road. >> reporter

suskin has spent the day asking about the students involved. greg? >>> and we know that arson investigators with cmpd did interview students here today but so far they've said nothing about possible charges. this was called out around 9:00 this morning as a fire in a middle school bathroom here at walter g buyers, the smoke spread into the hallway there and all 525 students were first evacuated from the building and then sent home before noon. cms says they did that because of lingering concerns about smoke in the building this afternoon. charlotte fire investigators won't say specifically what burned or what ignited in the bathroom. except to see some kind of liquid that was thrown on the floor. but parents who got an automated phone call and an email saying come get your kids were really concerned when they learned this was a crime. >> why are they not monitoring the kids ? why are you not monitoring the halls ? why are >> the fire did about 3,000 to $4,000 worth of damage to the bathroom. today during the drill they say it went off very well. they

reporter greg suskin spoke to troopers about what caused this. >> this is a very rural stretch of road in the western part of chester county. but it does have a lot of truck traffic. that traffic was detoured most of the day today as they shut down highway 9 following this horrific crash. from chopper 9 sky zoom, you can spot logs dumped across highway 9. what's difficult to make out are the two vehicles involved. >> this is one of the worst accidents i've seen. >>> ed darby says that because of the tremendous force of the impact. a logging truck and chevy work van hit head-on when the driver of the van crossed the center line at highway nine and turnbuckle road. it crushed the cab of the log truck pinning the driver inside. it took two hours to remove his body. the van was incinerated. westchester fire chief andy martin says he found it on fire. >> it was fully involved. out. the driver was all ready out of the van. >> looking at the debris strewn across the road it was hard to tell what came from where. both drivers were killed. mike davis of clover and the log truck and jackie blayl
