nbc's leanne gregg is live in boulder this morning. of the damage. i can only imagine what they're finding. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, chris. some of it is really not too pleasant. property that's damaged. thick mud lining the streets. in some places, no streets at all. across the 17 counties where there's flood damage, something like 19,000 homes have been either damaged or destroyed. more than 30 bridges destroyed. more than 100 miles of roads wiped out. those numbers are soft, they will change. in fact in a few hours there will be another briefing with updated numbers. that 600 some people unaccounted for, for example, is expected to be reduced drastically. people who haven't had power or cell phone service or laptops are trying to reconnect with others, so officials think that there will be fewer people unaccounted for. the death toll, however, has risen to eight people and there is fear that that will increase when the waters recede. crews are going to go inside the flooded areas. that's when they think that the death toll c

nbc's lee anne gregg joins us from hard-hit boulder. leea leeanne, good morning to you. what's the latest you're hearing? >> reporter: that's right much the office of emergency management puts that number of unaccounted for at 650 people. that's half as much as yesterday morning. they expect that number to decrease dramatically again today as more and more are able to access phones, computers and contact their friends and family members. 17 different counties across the state are flooded. that means thousands of people have homes that are damaged or have been destroyed. more than 30 bridges have been wiped out along with more than 100 miles of roads. those numbers are rough and those numbers are also expected to increase. eight people are confirmed dead and that number too, unfortunately, may rise as officials say when the waters recede they will do extensive ground searches. that's when they are concerned that more people will be found dead. so today the emphasis will be in the air, those searches in the remote areas where people have been stranded with no power, no roa

. >> let's go to nbc's leanne gregg who has been monitoring the situation from boulder. good news right now is the unaccounted for has been going down. >> reporter: that's true, that number has been changing from the beginning. it's gone down drastically today to 600 at one point. and we expect that number to drop significantly again. because as people are restoring their power, getting cell phone service and getting to laptops, they are able to reach out to their friends and family members. so the big push today, of course, is to take care of some of those people who have been stranded without their power, without any cell service and without even any roads that are passable. as many as 1,000 people have been stranded in larimer county and the real focus today is that air rescue. they have been up, the sun is out, the weather is great. yesterday they also made a lot of progress. more than 20 helicopters got into the air and brought hundreds of people out. today they're hoping to do the same. so so far that is going well. search crews also are on the ground looking for p
