host: governor gregoire, that you for your time today. james holman, there was a lot of ground cover but what was -- what struck you? >> she wants a job in the obama administration and a second term. she is the chairman of the national governors' association. she very deliberately avoided any of the republican governors partly because she sees her role in the non-partisan way but to also talk about real pain. call it one of the toughest jobs you can have a she talked about shredding critical parts of the safety net. she said she was on doing much of the progress she had made in the last seven years. i thought that was pretty striking. that was a resignation to the economic realities. a couple of opportunities were passed by to criticize washington. she was very public that she would not seek a third term but would love a job in the obama administration. >> the governors tend to say they've don't have as much rancor in their ranks. everyone was at the meeting this weekend continue that is not necessarily the case. these governors have seri

gregoire downplays what is happening in washington. she has a unified legislature. she faced a lot of criticism for not raising taxes and was passed budget. in minnesota, wisconsin, new jersey, you are seeing more battles just like the disfunction we see in washington. host: this goes to the larger picture of job creation. >> absolutely, this will not be the last time this year we hear about job creation. every former republican governor who would like to be in the race in 2012 was talking about job creation. it is interesting to see what the records are and how much you can do as a governor. governor gregoire dr. of infrastructure but those and other things that happen overnight. those are things you may start during your term of the impact does not come until five or 10 years down the road and you don't get credit for that. >> when gregoire took office after 2006, she came in during a huge swell of revenues from natural economic cycles. choose able to increase spending by $5 billion. many governors are now coming in in a bad economic climate and did not get to spe

spoke about afghanistan as a good work and he needed to show because of the national security state gregoire politics till we find a way to end that the president remained captive to that. he had to show he was tough. i think what is going on is you have the ability on a number of core issues, one of them is afghanistan, corporate power is another, transpartisan majority who want a way out of afghanistan, believe corporate power is strong in this country and a president with leadership could seize that and find a way to build politics around that. thinking of president johnson, wars kill reform presidencies. and president obama, he is a reform, too ltd. but in these areas he is a reform president. it is imperative for citizens, progress of, citizens of conscience to organize more independently and find ways to drive those issues into the next election but more generally build coalitions that will give space to those progressive politicians in our system working with people to make the changes we need. we are seeing that even as someone told me the story that we're rolling back collective bar
