could greta gerwig slide in there with a infantrymen nation for "little women"? possibly.e doesn't, if we don't see women in the best directing category tomorrow, i don't think that indicates the kind of bias necessarily we've seen in past years. i think it just says this year the competition is really intense. there's other benchmarks we can be looking to. not just about oscar nominations. when we talk about measuring progress and diversity. >> nicole, let me ask you this. in the 91 year history of the academy awards, only five women have ever been nominated for best director. look at that, that compares to 443 nominations for men. what is going on here? >> well, i think there's implicit bias going on. ening directors are described as muscular, commanding of set, able to rally the troops. they are given iterates heavily correlated to men. women are looked at as nurturers. this bias from studies suggests an idea of what makes a director is just perpetuated. our winner, kathryn bigelow, she made a big action movie, a war movie andening is why she snuck in to win the oscar.

. >> there is also a particular outcry over director greta gerwig not being nominated for "little women". the film itself did get nominated for best picture. why that oversight? >> there are theories i have seen about this, one of them that is going around is a lot of male voters did not maybe see the movie. they would not like it, so that could be maybe one reason male voters did not vote for her in the director category. another reason is there are not many women in general directing movies. and it definitely showed with the nominations yesterday. yes, that was the most notable snub. >> it seems like a groundhog's day, minor changes were made and it happened again to is the academy listening to the public on this one? what does it take to change an ingrained institution? >> i mean, i think they have been listening. after the voters backlash went viral a few years ago they made some changes in their voter rank, trying to make the body of their members more diverse, and although it has helped a little, they should keep looking at who is voting for these awards. it is actually white men.
