i'm gretchen carlson. welcome to "the real story" today. she can plead the fifth all she wants but the e-mails just released under the freedom of information act show lerner contacted her bosses at the irs and the department of justice in may 2013 asking about whether tax-exempt groups could be criminally prosecuted for lying about political activity. peter doocy live in washington with this breaking news. what are we learning in these just released e-mails? >> gretchen, we're learning in great detail the reason why some conservative groups were singled out for possible prosecution while their applications for tax-exempt status were being processed at the irs. so we've got this one e-mail written by lois lerner. it summarizes a phone call with the head of elections crimes at the justice department. and it says this, quote -- "he wanted to know who at irs the d.o.j. folks could talk to about senator whitehouse idea at the hearing that d.o.j. could piece together false statement cases about applicants who lied on their 1024s saying they weren
