he goes john i'm doing the gridiron speech. you're funny, write some jokes. i wrote some jokes, sent them in had a call from frank mankiewicz who put it together and he said, you're funny, you ought to do this for a living. i'm thinking they're trying to ease me out of politics. try something different. many young kids coming up so i saw jay had been named to take over "the tonight show", started sending in jokes. >> always doing mondays and tuesdays. >> and then a week at a time. i saw he bought jokes from freelancers. i sent in some jokes and get this independent contractor they must have huge meetings at nbc, huge meetings. >> jack welch convening the board. >> the vote was 7-4 on the board to keep going. >> absolutely. >> and i didn't know there was 9,000 of these freelancers. so i sent in jokes and jay would use ones, one every once in a while. i get $50, frame the check. my wife says you cash the check, you idiot. so i did that. and then february of '92 jay, phone rings, jay says i'm putting together my staff, you want a job? i'm there, sure. >> did you

i think now we probably teach more carriage on the gridiron. we are teaching them how to be graceful losers and that's important in life too read we haven't had a conference champion in a long time. c-span: what do you teach? >> guest: i'm teaching a course at the university asked me to put together called congress and the president. we go into the background of the division of powers and the constitution, how congress and the president are expected to work together, how they view -- do work together. some historical areas like and henry clay's time and affirmative course for speaker actually got us into a war the war of 1812. madison is not particularly keen on it. the speaker of the house assumed a dominant role and other. like that after the civil war when a very assertive group in congress didn't like what the president was doing and brought forward an impeachment against president johnson who want to bring together conciliation between the north and south. one of the articles of impeachment i went back and read them, said that he said in a
