i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. we have learned new details surrounding a deadly plane crash in sonoma county. the accident happened shortly after the plane took off from the sonoma skypark yesterday. the pilot was killed and his young children were taken to the hospital. kpix 5's jessica flores is live at children's hospital in oakland with the latest. >> reporter: kenny, those children were on board the plane that their father was piloting. now, we do not know how badly they were injured, but we do know they were rushed here by helicopter to children's hospital oakland and we do not know their conditions at this time but we are learning more about their parents. we are told that the family was on board that single-engine plane when it crashed just before 1:00 p.m. yesterday. just about 1,000 feet from the sonoma sky park airport it crashed. the parachute deployed. the father now identified as 38- year-old william s. goldman, died in the crash. his wife serra goldman was taken to sonoma valley hospital and the coup

i'm michelle griego. >> and i'm anne makovec in for kenny.very lane of westbound 80 is blocked at el portal drive. >> reporter: that's right. all lanes are blocked here. and traffic is being diverted off the freeway. you can see the flashing lights in the distance and the coroner just arrived at the scene. the chp tells us the crash involved two vehicles. the driver of one car died on scene. and two people in a second car were taken to the hospital. and the evidence scene could be quite large which is why all lanes are shut down at highway 80 and el portal. all lanes are blocked and if you're taking a look. these are the vehicles going off the freeway at el portal. and traffic is backed up for a mile. you can see the traffic behind me backed up for at least a mile. it was probably even backed up further. chp tells us they hope to have all lanes open by 6:30 a.m. but again, this is a large accident scene and they want to make sure they have all the evidence before opening the lanes back up to traffic. i'm jessica flores, kpix 5. >>> the city o

i'm michelle griego. >> good morning. i'm kenny choi.kers are expected to decide the fate of a landmark climate deal. >> anne makovec is here to explain. >> if lawmakers don't do something, the program will expire in 2020. the state senate is voting at 10:00 this morning to extend the climate initiative. the governor said this is not a cook a mamie legacy. i'm going to be dead. and extend it now. big polluters get a cap or limit on the amount of greenhouse casts they can emit. they have to buy credits. and the price is often passed along to customers at the gas pump. the legislative analysts predicted that in 2021. gas could increase by 15 cents a gallon. but that could be as much as 63 cents a gallon. some lawmakers say that's better than what could be the alternative -- a carbon tax. >> because of that goal that they have, the carbon tax will come on and we'll see a major increase. >> the program also requires air quality monitoring and improvements in the most polluted neighborhoods. lawmakers passed a separate gas tax hike in april.

good morning, it is thursday, july 13, i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego.0. >>> kpix 5's jessica flores is live in lafayette with more on the fight against the flames. jessica. >> reporter: good morning. that firefight is now wrapping up. but the investigation into what caused this fire is just starting. take a look at the damage behind me. you can see that two-story building just ravaged in this fire black charred building left behind. and you can see how one floor collapsed on to the other. now, it's actually two buildings, one is a restaurant which is connected to an office building that houses the chamber of commerce. our anchor ken bastida was on his way home after the 11 p.m. news when he saw massive flames. he took this video for us. the fire broke out just after midnight. and firefighters went into defensive mode to keep the fire from spreading. they knocked it down within the hour. but, of course, they continued to work on those hot spots. folks downtown could see the huge flames shooting in the air in the middle of the night. people were standing

i'm kenny choi. >> i'm anne makovec in for michelle griego. it is 6:31. jessica flores is live in oakland where the east bay m.u.d. is talking about the proposed hike today. jessica. >> reporter: good morning. it's a controversy shall proposal and has complaints pouring in. east bay m.u.d. officials say they have to raise rates because of revenue being down. they didn't make enough money during the drought. and that's because customers did exactly what they were told to do. they conserved water. and now those same customers could be paying the price. the rate increase proposal 19% over the next two years for its 1.4 million customers. some customers feel like they are being penalized for saving water. east bay m.u.d. says the rate increases are critical to invest in infrastructure. everything from water treatment plants, aqueducts and 4200 miles of pipe. >> we do have to recoup some of the water bills that were lost during the historic drought. >>> east bay m.u.d. nearly doubled rates over the past 10 years raising rates annually 7.1%. now, this proposal

i'm anne makovec for michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. >>> right now in san jose, firefighters areing to stamp out the hot spots after a massive fire in the foothills. kpix 5's jessica flores is live at the scene with the details. jessica. >> reporter: kenny, that's right. those huge flames are out. but those hot spots remain and that's why fire crews are still here. but take a look around me at this devastation. this is one of the homes burned. two homes in total. you can see this one once a beautiful home with views of the city below now completely charred and destroyed. that garage you're looking at and a car behind that garage door destroyed. the fire ripped through 100 acres a forced evacuation in total burned two homes. the flames broke out around 4:30 p.m. yesterday here in the foothills of east san jose near lariat lane and claitor way. smoke covered silicon valley. they contained the flames and evacuated the residents. the fire burned one home and damaged another. 11 homes were evacuated. we spoke to a resident whose home is still standing and thanking fire crews. >> house

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi.re is threatening a community near yosemite national park. anne makovec reports. >> reporter: we are expecting an update at 7 a.m. the fire destroyed 50 homes at last count and 49 other smaller buildings. it is only 10% contained as of now. the latest destruction is near mariposa. the fire started on sunday and then blew up over the last few days. it's burned 109 square miles. it's littered with dead trees that have been killed by bark beetles and, of course, years of drought. that makes it prime fire fuel. the fire started about 2 miles east of lake mcclure. flames jumped the merced river and several retardant lines and roads. it's threatening about 1500 homes and other buildings. nearly 5,000 people have been evacuated. but some are staying put watching the conditions including those at a hospital in mariposa. >> our first concern is the health and well-being of our patients. and to move them from this facility, um, puts added stress on them. the experts here said that our best optio

. >> and i'm michelle griego. an 8-month-old baby missing for several hours is back with his family. he was inside his father's car when he was stolen in sole dad. the boy was then handed over to complete strangers. >> reporter: the woman who stays in this rv was won up with a loud knock. a man-made an unusual request, asking her to take a baby she's never seen before. >> he said take this baby. i grabbed this car and there's a baby in it. >> reporter: he was getting ready for work and ran inside only for a minute he says. when he came out the car and his baby boy were gone. >> and i said what baby. he said just come here. >> the car thief drove the car to san jose. a man who works nearby said something was going on. >> i didn't want to get involved but i was like -- once i seen the baby a second time i didn't have a choice. >> reporter: he questioned the man who was breaking into another vehicle. collin took the baby and called 911. >> he wasn't concerned in the slightest. i could tell he was spun out or somethin

i'm kenny choi. >> i'm anne makovec in for michelle griego. 6:31. >>> jessica flores has a look at the damage left behind at the scene. jessica. >> reporter: anne, kenny, we just got an up data right now from fire crews. they tell us that this fire is 50% contained. you can see behind me, i am standing in front of the home that was burned in this fire. this one completely destroyed. another home burned. if you look up above, we have chopper 5 in the air that gives you a nice view of the entire fire. it wrapped around the community burning hills on both sides of the street. right now the huge flames are out, but fire crews stayed through the night monitoring hot spots working to make sure the flames don't spread. it's smoldering right now. the fire started at 4:30 p.m. yesterday and fire crews raced to contain the flames that burned more than 100 acres and filled the sky with thick smoke seen for miles. one home destroyed, another burned. the flames forced evacuations for 11 homes. we spoke to one of the residents who described the chaotic mome

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi.ldfire burning near a popular tourist destination has exploded in size. kpix 5's jackie ward reports. >> reporter: good morning. it is far from being contained in mariposa county. the detwiler fire has surpassed 25,000 acres and is threatening the town of mariposa. that fire is burning about 6 miles from the border of yosemite national park. right now, cal fire says it's just 5% contained. already, eight structures have been destroyed and another damaged. the california department of forestry and fire protection says as of last night, 39 square miles have been scorched. flames are now edging towards mariposa. a gold rush era counsel of about 2,000 people, mariposa cattle ranches are trying to evacuate their livestock from the foothills. >> we were unprepared. keeping our cows together in case that fire jumps the highway again. we are either going to start cutting fences and pushing them through different properties, just to give them a fighting chance. >> reporter: there is a hospital

good afternoon, i'm anne makovec, in for michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. that fire is burning along i-80 12 miles northeast of truckee. besides the westbound closure, the eastbound side is also closed at state route 267 for crews to get crew and equipment into the area. 650 acres have burned. cal fire is helping out with the water drops. chp says that the fire is now 10% contained. there's no estimate time of reopening the freeway. traffic is heavy in the area. chp crews are directing cars around the area as the fire reaches the road. they are trying to protect wildlife, like this deer, to stay safe. >>> we are also getting new information about the damage left behind by the wall fire burning near oroville. at least 41 homes have been destroyed since the fire started last friday. more than 4,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. but some have since been allowed to return home. that fire has burned nearly 6,000 acres. it is now 45% contained. >>> to washington now, where donald trump, jr., is releasing new details about his meeting with a russian lawyer
