griff good morning to you. griff: good morning, maria.one whose ever been to jacksonville knows this late night landmark spot, marina cafe behind me, you can see has taken on flooding this is the new river the rainfall and the storm , the new river is causing the problems and let me just walk you through the parking lot of the marina. in the distance is where the new river comes up there's actually a marina obviously behind us but it is at almost record levels maria at 14 feet the new river floods. that's the flood stage level but it's at 24.08 this morning the record is 25.1. where i'm standing right now this is the parking lot. the dock master you see in the distance has been backing a boat trying to assess the damage. we have a little reprieve in the rain. its been raining all morning but he's getting his first look at the dock to the damage but if you look out there you can see just unbelievable what its been doing, where we are officials saying they've already made rescues this morning trying to get to people, but with rain in the fo

griff described the wind very well. he is on the bad side of the storm, on the right side of the eye where the winds are driving water in. directly above the direction of the eye we have been getting wind blowing across this barrier island. we are not experiencing the same storm surge they are further up the coast. the storm is battering buildings with heavy winds and it is too dark, the power has been knocked out since 1:30 so we can't get a good survey of potential damage on the buildings but this constant battering wind is likely to cause some structural damage the residents on this island have done a great job boarding up with secure belongings and preventing things from getting picked up by the wind and becoming projectile's. this island has become a ghost town overnight. most people have evacuated to wilmington on the mainland or further inland. some people from the coast evacuating as far in land as charlotte, 200 miles from the coast, charlotte mecklenburg public schools canceled classes so they could use school

that's where griff jenkins is standing by. still coming down? >> finally, after more than 30 hours, florence has continued her fire hose off. it's pitch black. everywhere you drive along highway 70, it goes up to the city of raleigh, you just see trees ripped out by their roots, store fronts destroyed, a gas station collapsed, power lines down everywhere in small sections of flooding over in atlantic beach. morehead city is on the coast. it's pitch black over there except for one condo building, looks like it may have auxillary lights on. the fire chief is trying to get a handle on everything. the pier is broken in half. it's gone out to sea. let me give you a little bit of news. i got off the phone with officials in new bern. they say they have about a hundred more rescues they are carrying out at this moment. they have done more than 375. one of the challenges they have right now is where to put the people they are rescuing. they have run out of space. because of the epic flooding, they are trapped on where they can take people to. one of the

griff jenkins. one last look at the big wall where we can see the track of the storm, this is a satellite loop. it shows the hurricane is down to a category one. i believe that it's most likely down to a tropical storm because the last report was 75 miles an hour. 74 is the lowest -- highest number of a hurricane or the lowest numbers that makes it a hurricane. so we believe it's probably a tropical storm now headed due west at 6 miles an hour. the rain from the radar loop shows it's still pounding all along the north carolina coast and they expect it to continue throughout the night. you see what griff was just experiencing here, that is going to go on for 36 hours. it will get much worse over the next 12, and kind of remain at that bad phase of it for probably a good 24 hours. tornado concerns, as well. that is always the case with a landfilling system. not quite like the oklahoma category five tornado things, but maybe a 1. f1 or an f2 tornado could pop up. we have to look at that tornado watch in effect. this is the track of the storm. curves, slows down from a saturday at 8:00 a.m. that's three or two and half days from now. then it was about 150 miles, here. the hurricane force winds extend out 80 miles on either side of that, so it's 160 miles of hurricane force winds. the tropical storm force winds extend almost 400 miles. 400 miles all the way across. it is a big area here that is going to be dealing with those wins. they are, sunday, and eventually by monday, that high to the north begins and the storm begins to move on out, bringing some rain to parts of the ohio valley and the beach in new england. not like we will see in the south. th
