he spoke with our griff jenkins at his company's virginia plant. >> this is a production facility to build carriers here in the united states. >> reporter: and what does one do with this product? >> well, i tell people it's a dump truck on rubber tracks. >> reporter: so, ken, how will obama care impact your business? >> well, initially we don't think there is an immediate impact. the worry we have looking forward is what will obama care do to the rise in premium rates from the insurance companies within virginia. if we're faced with 50, 60, 70% increase in premium costs that we have to pass to our employees, then we have a new decision to make. and that decision is do we leave the traditional health insurance marketplace and force our employees into the exchange, or do we force our employees to pay a greater part of their take-home salaries? if it ends up providing more health insurance to a broader swath of people, then great. but the problems for small businesses like mine is it going to come at a cost that forces me to make some really difficult decisions that could harm our emplo

griff jenkins reports from maryland. >> many of us thought it would be a rocky, bumpy start as 2014 willa rocky, bumpy year but i don't know of anybody who had any idea how rocky and bumpy this period would be. >> dr. gail wile nsky a former medicaid director in the exchanges. >> the devil rays is making it hard for people to easily understand how many people are actually enrolling in private health insurance plans in the exchanges. the numbers that are bandied about are the people who visited the web site maybe how many accounts are set up. but very little specific information about how many people enrolled in private insurance. sometimes we're now starting to hear numbers that include medicaid as well as private insurance, but when that happens, nobody is saying and oh, by the way, medicaid represents 90 or 95% of that total. >> the numbers are striking. in maryland, 97% of those who signed up, simply enrolled in medicaid while barely more than 2,000 people actually bought private health insurance. in washington state, 87% enrolled in medicaid compared to the roughly 4500 that took ins

griff jenkins went to california to find out. >> in 1981, this family started brookfield's restaurante in sacramento. today, the family-owned business has three restaurants, a meat packing facility and nearly 200 employees. the president sam says he has serious concerns over what the new healthcare law may mean for their future. >> we are probably affected the most. i have always thought of myself as a small business, but, under obama care, with 180 employees, we are considered a large business. and we have to provide affordable healthcare to our employees. back in july, what we did is we implemented obama care because that was our renewal period for our insurance. so we presented it to our employees like obama care was starting back in june of this year. and we had 88 individuals that were eligible for the insurance. of the 88 people that were eligible, only 43 ended up signing up. >> 12 years ago catherine bragg and her husband started a bakery here in downtown nevada, california. today it's grown into a successful small business with 20 employees and goods are sold in seven countie

griff jenkins spoke with two different business owners who have two very different views on the healtheping] >> we like to say we are a small company that can do big things the right way. we have been in business for 40 years. >> how many employees? how many trucks you got that do the electrical contracting? >> well, we're small. we've got nine employees. we've got three trucks. >> have you figured out how obama care will effect you? >> no. that's the truth. >> are you anticipating your rates to increase? >> we he need two more employees in the early 20s. that rate we have already been told will increase by 75%. if rates go up really high and i can't afford it, i'm sure i'm going to have to give them a choice of whether they want to pay more and stick with the company policy or whether they would like to go it on their own. >> good deal for small business? is it good for you? >> no. do you want me to say any more than that. >> yeah. >> that's it, no. >> not all small businesses are as concerned about the new healthcare law. jamall lee is the owner of a production studio in southern mar
