people anticipating this full lunar eclipse. 2,500 to 3,000 people here at the griffith observatory alone. so many they had to close the entrance to the observatory. we spoke with dr. krup, director here. he described for us just what we're going to see when we do get this total eclipse. >> the most likely thing because the moon is passing through a half of the shadow, it's fully in the shadow, but it's closer to the edge rather than the center. it's probably going to be a brighter eclipse. should be a typical copper red total lunar eclipse. to get that copper red from all the world's sunrises and sunsets, light being bent on to the moon when that shadow is dark enough for us to see it. >> we're still about two hours from when they say the peak visibility will occur. in the meantime, behind me the revelers sort of enjoying a great night on the grass in front of the griffith observatory waiter for that moment to occur, rosemary and john. >> paul, there's a variety of telescopes, different powers, different abilities there just behind you. give us an idea what people are doing and how many

live at the griffith observatory in los angeles.ck parker who is standing by in mexico city with the view from there. what is happening over there? how is the party? >> reporter: john, there is a great feeling of excitement at mexico's society. for most of the day there was a very violent electrical storm and a lot of cloud cover so hopes weren't very high that they would actually be able to see anything. in the last half-hour the skies have opened. the clouds parted and we now have a nice bright pale man just behind us. so there's a real feeling of enthusiasm and excitement amongst the 70 students gathered here this evening. it is well worth remembering, mexico has an extremely rich tradition of astronomy stretching way back to the precolonial times when the aztecs and mayans used astronomy to create their own calendars. so a long tradition of astronomy in the country. this society itself stretching back to 1902 when it was founded. one of the oldest in the world. so joining me now is aldo one of the members and a student. why do y
