lujan grisham. the speaker pro tempore: the gentlelady from new mexico is recognized for five minutes. ms. lujan grisham: i want to thank the gentlemen very much for their support on this bill. i rise, of course, in support of my bill, h.r. 3998, which would direct, as you've heard, the general services administration to sell for fair market value the historic post office building in downtown albuquerque, new mexico, to the amy biehl high school foundation. as you've also heard, the charter school is named after a young fullbright scholar from santa fe who was in fact trg tragically killed -- tragically lled in africa trying to end apartheid. the school is a few blocks away from a public library, historical theater and a robust transportation center. 55% of the students that attend this school receive free or reduced lunch. 64% of the students will be first generation to attend college. and 70% of the students represent minority families in new mexico. in fact, this school primarily serves at-risk y

miss lujan grisham: thank you mr. speaker, i thank the gentleman for yielding and rise in opposition to the language in this bill that rolls back standards and ensure our children are being fed nutritious foods at school. as a former state health secretary, i want to refocus this debate where i think it belongs and that's on health. what we are really talking about here is the health of our children. more than 1/3 of children adolescents are overweight or obese, and more than two million ahe dough lessents are prediabetic. mr. speaker, children who learn to eat nutritious food are more likely to continue those healthy habits as adults, and the best place to teach children about healthy eating is where they spend most of their time in school. mr. speaker, i urge my colleagues concerned about the cost of nutritious food to think about the cost of obesity and malnutrition and to think about our children's future. my colleagues say that it's too hard. that children realry don't like healthy foods. and i agree that making

[applause] next, representative lujan grisham rom -- lujan from new mexico. >> thank you. i also want to join my colleagues in thanking whip hoyer for giving us all an opportunity to collaborate with him and the democratic caucus in the make it in america plan. all too often a middle class job does not support a middle class life anymore. now, our goal today is -- and actually every day -- is to fix that fundamental problem by making sure that there are enough jobs, good-paying jobs, and that americans have the skills necessary to obtain those jobs. and that exactly -- that's exactly what my bill aims to do. the education for jobs act will allow working professionals to who are tryinging to update their skill set or improve their career path, bru limited to taking one course at a time because of costs or time constraints, to now be eligible to apply for federal student loans. the rising cost of education is a huge barrier for these students who cannot afford tuition costs and are not eligible for federal aid because they cannot meet the current halftime requirements. expan
