"time" magazine correspondent once called him a man with a john wayne swagger and a growl like a grizzly. is that how you remember him? this truly was a 20th century american military hero general schwarzkopf was a bigger than life man. his nickname personified that. it was a label he would protest openly. he was a humble man. what he-when you think about what he was asked to do, you keep it in context. the army had gone through this incredible turmoil post vietnam. i was a young lieutenant during that period. our army doctrine grew, it emerged. it was validated by general schwarzkopf in the deserts of kuwait when he ousted saddam's military. he was the significant man at an incredibly significant time for our military. he did it mag nnificenmagnifice. stormin norman is not because he was a gentleman, he had a volcanic temper, but the beauty of that was you knew where you stood with this guy. he was a magnificent soldier who truly loved those soldiers that served for him. it's a great loss for our nation. >> it most certainly is. it was quite a shock when i heard about it last night. it

more than 26,000 fans crammed into washington grizzly stadium to watch the annual battle on the gridiron. during the game, mostly during halftime when there's a break in the action, fans come up to me and say, hi, max, good to see. we start talking about football. but often turned to washington, especially the fiscal crisis. not once did someone say, don't do this, don't raise my taxes, don't count my favorite program. not once did i receive a parochial treaty request. my montana bosses told me again and again, max, just get it done. you guys need to work together. just get it done. i was really almost stunned at the unity and the intensity with which people spoke to me, get it done. now, these folks didn't ask for stalemates. they didn't ask for influx of billy. they didn't ask for our leaders to dig in over ideological things. they are pragmatic. american people want congress and the president to work together. they want us to tackle these challenges. keeping with the football theme, i want to show the words of vince lombardi, the famed actress -- packers coach wants it people to work

we're here to continue the message, grizzlies to find a solution to the economic situation that we are facing. we gather today as a broad coalition through all sorts of members of the washington advocacy community and folks from all around the country to stand here together to say we need a congress that governs. we need a congress that solves our problems. and we are especially concerned today about lifting up middle class families that are so apprehensive about the future and the working poor in the nation that kept getting pushed further and further to the margins. it's time that our congress acts and it is my great honor to introduce one of the members of the senate that is pushing for a reasonable solution. reasonable revenue for responsible programs. senator harkin has been an advocate for years. he represents the state of iowa and knows what the middle class is struggling with, and it is with great pleasure that i introduce to you senator harkin.
