will are stocking up on food, water, and back up generators ahead of time meteorologist michele grossman now is tracking this tropical storm for us it's getting serious good morning >> hey there, guys it's going to be something we're going to watch at least through the weekend. let's take a look at what's happening now. this is what's called the enhanced satellite you can see it's a small storm now impacting windward islands to the leeward islands that is today the next several hours. it will then pass south of puerto rico wednesday as a tropical storm and then eventually hit hispaniola. there are a few things we know about the storm. first it is in very warm waters so we do anticipate it to increase to a category 1 storm near hispaniola. 75 miles south of saint lucia, it will move its track west over the next several days. by hispaniola category 1 storm this will be the key there as it moves over the mountains in the dominican republic, we could see it kind of break up a bit. so that will be the telltale sign of what will happen to the u.s. at the very latest we're going to see rain and

msnbc's mariana atencio joins me from puerto rico and michelle grossman has the forecast.helle, first tell us what is the track, is there a division between the european model and the american model. where do we think this thing is headed? >> hi there. the american model toward the carolinas, the european southern georgia and the eastern coast of florida. we had big time changes since 11:00 advisory. now forecasted to be a major hurricane, a category 3 storm hitting either anywhere from southern florida to georgia. this is where it stands right now, looking at the satellite affecting parts of the lesser antilles in to puerto rico. we expect it to increase to a category 1 storm overnight into thursday. so taking a look at the track here, we are looking at 25 miles southeast of st. croix. winds at 70 miles per hour. that was a big jump at the 11:00 advisory. we were at 60 and we've jumped up to 70. we're looking at gusts higher than that and a category 1 storm is 74 mile perhour winds. northwest at 13 miles per hour. we're going to move it quickly over the eastern part of th

and for that we turn to nbc news meteorologist michelle grossman. michelle, take it away. >> all right. hi there, steve. this is a storm that has exceeded expectations since the beginning. the first thought about this was a tropical storm the whole way throughout. since then has increased with every advisory for the past 24 hours. we just got the latest advisory as of 11:00. so just a few minutes ago. and once again, we have seen an increase in the strength. we're look at winds at 85 miles per hour. still a category 1 storm. we do project it to be a category 3 storm in time for it to make landfall somewhere in florida. let's take you through the movement. it's moving at 13 miles per hour. that's been pretty steady over the past 24 hours. that's a good thing. at least it was a good thing for the virgin islands. it moved pretty quickly even though it did batter the virgin islands earlier today. so looking on radar we see the swirl right there, we see the eye closing in right now but we see the heavy rain around it. right now over the open waters of th

michelle grossman our meteorologist. joining me now on the phone is a noaa hurricane hunter pilot lieutenant commander robert mitchell who has been flying through hurricane dorian today. commander mitchell, are you still in the air, or are you back on land? >> good afternoon. i'm sorry. can you ask that again? >> what are you seeing, commander? what have you learned about dorian on this flight? >> well, we've been flying into the storm with our research aircraft for the last ten hours or so. we've been in the storm, flying at low level. we're about four hours, we did four passes through the storm, and unique to this storm was we got to experience what we call an eyewall replacement cycle. as we entered the storm this morning there were actually two eyewalls, and we passed through the first one as it wasn't formed very well. we got into the center of the eye, which is very, very small. only about five miles across. and throughout the flight we, as we head through the storm we saw the eye slowly forming stronger and gettin

msnbc meteorologist michelle grossman joins me now. every update we get on this hurricane makes it seem more serious. >> you are right, ali. it does seem like every update we get a little bit stronger and we made it to a category 3 storm. i love the explainer, a picture shows a thousand words and we need to get prepared. even looking at this enhanced image, you can see how much it has blossomed even in the past hour or so from your first frame to the last frame, there is that eye right there showing us how strong it is. let's look at the stats of where we're at right now. category 3 storm over those open waters, those warm waters helping it strengthen. and, yes, we will most likely see a category 4 storm. it is located 620 miles east of west palm beach, florida, 115 mile per hour sustained winds, gusts higher than that, and it's moving at 10 miles per hour. tonight it's going to begin to slow down and almost stall as it gets closer to land. so as we are tracking dorian, we are now at a category 3 storm. it seems unbelievable from day o
