martin savidge is live in guatemala city. you've been working on this story for a long time. martin? >> reporter: yeah, dave. i think today is gonna be a crucial day at least for the legal team of john mcafee as they attempt to pull out one last-minute stay to prevent him from being deported back to bozize. he's been in hiding from belize authorities who say they don'tly want to question him about the death of his american neighbor, greg fall. yet, he feels he's threatened by the authorities. you know, dramatic, he says he -- he came here to guatemala where he felt safe. and he hired and attorney -- an attorney and was seen very public. we saw him in belize. and yet it is here where he was arrested. he was brought in because he entered this country illegally. he asked for asylum. that's been denied. so it is anticipated he will head back to belize to answer

[ sirens blaring ] instead of being deported to belize in handcuffs on thursday, a seemingly unconscious john mcafee is wheeled into a hospital on a gurney. mcafee's month-long game of cat and mouse with authorities in two countries, ended with a sudden emergency. the software anti-virus pioneer, apparently suffering from a heart problem thursday morning, became unresponsive in this immigration detention center. mcafee telling abc news -- >> i simply passed out. and i think that's the combination of stress and everything else. i hit my head. >> reporter: a dramatic scene, with this ambulance powering through a thicket of cameramen. mcafee,

martin savidge is in guatemala city, and, martin, first of all, why the back and forth here?government saying no to his first request? >> reporter: well, i think simply because the government has realized that there's no real political basis for john mcafee to claim that he needs asylum. in other words, police have only said in belize that they want to question him regarding the death of his neighbor, so that's not a political issue. it's a legal issue. seeking asylum just simply is not the correct path to take, and the government here said no. then it was just shortly after that turn-down that we had the next drama. that was, of course, the health emergency. it caused a great deal of commotion. there was the excitement outside of the detention center where he is. there's john mcafee being laid out on a stretcher, and he is suffering from something. he has taken on to a police hospital, and he is evaluated there for several hours. later when i talked to the police there, they said it was simply a matter of what appeared to be stress. his attorney says it was a mild heart atta

a few weeks later, he surfaces in guatemala city saying he wanted asylum in guatemala.night back to the united states. he ends up in miami. and is on south beach. he continues to insist he had nothing to do with the murder of his neighbor. he continues to insist that authorities in belize were out to get him because he didn't pay a bribe to a politician. so that's why mcafee says he was on the run and wouldn't stay in belize and he says he's glad to be back here now in miami and in the united states. the question is will authorities here want to talk to him. probably so because the man who was killed in belize, his neighbor, is a u.s. businessman and the fbi would have jurisdiction over the murders of u.s. citizens in other countries. so it's very likely that mcafee will at the very least have to talk with federal authorities about what he knows about his neighbor's killing. john zarrella cnn, miami. >>> in a controversial move, a dead marine will not be awarded the medal of honor. some say he was already brain dead when he landed on a grenade to save his fellow soldier
