let's go back to guerneville now and bring in nbc's jodi hernandez. >> reporter: we're in guerneville where folks are dealing with quite a mess. folks here say they got about 3 feet of water in four hours last night, causing some pretty significant flooding in the streets and a lot of mud. now, the water has subsided quite a bit. but as you can see, there's still a lot of it out here. now, folks tell me they actually didn't expect it to be this bad. but they say nearby five creek overflowed, and the county has not maintained that creek the way they say they should. so they say that flooding is happening quicker and quicker over the last several years. again, this is what folks woke up to this morning. the school district closed school for the day because there was so much mud in the parking lot, it was dangerous. i'm told school will reopen tomorrow. folks deal with this kind of flooding every year, but i'll tell you, it never gets easy, and it is never pleasant, and it will likely take days to dry out. in guerneville, i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> jodi, thank you. jodi's

some of the heavy flooding in guerneville. mike is tracking the wet commute this morning. >>> first, we want to start with meteorologist kari hall, leading our coverage. kari, is the storm moving out? >> it's going to gradually taper off with widespread rain, but we'll still have the chance of lingering showers and maybe some thunderstorms going into this afternoon. but some of the heaviest rain is now pushing through the south bay. it's starting to ramp up again for marin county and along the coastline, into san francisco. and the heaviest rain has been over around sunnyvale, as well as down towards cupertino, campbell, san jose and milpitas. you can see where we are seeing pockets of heavier rain right around the alum rock area, lighter rain for evergreen, and then down 101 from morgan hill to gilroy. a very steady rain that's moving through. we're still seeing it coming down just to the south of fremont as you're getting a bit of a break for now. but once again, the overall trend will be for the rain to taper off, with some

a little bit further up the road in guerneville. at some of the flooding up in guerneville, which for reference is about 20 miles northwest of santa rosa. this video was taken right around 230. this morning. you can see the water rushing by right in front of people's homes, and you can also see it filling the front yards of certain homes as well. that's why around 1:00 this morning, the sonoma sheriff and members of the sonoma county fire department had to go door to door to alert people that fife creek had breached its banks and was flooding the small community north of downtown. residents were told to prepare to evacuate , but one local tells us this wasn't the first time to me, this is just pure negligence on the part of the state. >> uh- for not rectifying the situation. many years ago. it's not like this doesn't happen all the time. it does happen all the time. when it rains, when we have a rainy season, even a short rain like this, this is not a this is not a heavy rain. this is nothing but look >> in response to the flooding,

jessica burch is tracking the rain of the first let's go to shawn chitnis in guerneville where people in sycamore court are dealing with knee deep water. >> reporter: clean up began this morning as folks were trying to figure out how much damage they were facing in this neighborhood in guerneville. behind phaze there is still plenty water that's surrounded homes, cars, other belongings that make up the neighborhood. the water coming up to folks at their knees as they were walking from one place to the other trying to find whatever belongings they could salvage, what didn't get damaged from the flooding. even a refrigerator floating by. we know that the water came to at least the tire line of some cars, higher in other places. we spoke to some families that knew their home flooded and that's why they were trying to take whatever they could before they were seeking shelter. others left last night as sheriffs office and fire department were knocking asking people to evacuate and coming back this morning to see the damage, worried their homes may have been lost only to learn that just bar

shawn chitnis is live at guerneville where it is flooding. we know that the river overflows every year. what the are residents dealing with this morning? >> reporter: they certainly know first hand what it is like to deal with that and have been telling us about that. i will step out of the way so you can get a sense of what they are dealing with in this neighborhood. as we made our way up from 101 to get from guerneville we saw decent conditions. not much ponding. now into town we see the impact of the flooding that's affected the folks who live here, some who are in trailers in the area trying to get out and take whatever belongings they have and reach the red cross and seek shelter there for now as they wait to see how much this can potentially recede in the hours ahead. we want to show you some of the conditions we have been able to capture around guerneville with other residents dealing with this. we know that the water in this location as well as others is getting up to the knees of those who live here and also up to the tires of cars l

we just exited from the 101, still making our way to guerneville at the moment.erienced some heavy rain at different parts. but not that bad of a drive. in general, the heavy rain seems to have taken a break at this point. but that is completely different from what the scene was overnight, very different, especially in parts of the north bay like the city of guerneville, where residents saw flooding around the area of 5th street between mill and sycamore streets. one resident telling us the flooding in her area that happens frequently is compounded by heavier rain, but she's saying there is something that can be done about it. >> i think if they cleaned out the creek a little better from this end down and put a berm up, a good, thick berm, high berm, it would stop it from flooding all the time. to me, this is just pure negligence on the part of the state for not rectifying this situation many years ago. >> reporter: also in the north bay, places like san anselmo yesterday saw continuous rain, san anselmo creek was not flooded or close to it, but there was a lot o

let's head to the north bay, to the guerneville area. the school district is canceled all classes today because of local flooding related to the storm and shawn chitnis is nearby reporting. neighborhoods are flooding from nearby creeks as well. >> reporter: the water is starting to receive this morning but it is too late for some residents that live in this guerneville neighborhood. look at what is still part of a challenge at this hour, there is plenty of water surrounding the homes and cars in this neighborhood. we know that folks are getting door knocks early from the sheriff's office as well as the fire department, asking them to evacuate. many have been doing that. others tell us they showed up and saw the water was starting to into their homes . one family even having to evacuate and trying to bring as many belongings they can, walking through water that reach to their knees. and we just heard from a woman who had to leave in quÉbec this morning, unsure what her home would look like. >> trailers are not cheap. rents are not cheap.

now, i want to show you some tape that came from guerneville in guerneville, the situation is again,al flooding. not so much the russian river that's not at flood stage yet, but local flooding is a real big problem. and the other danger is falling trees because the ground is so saturated. and what happens is that the red cross now has a relief center at the safeway store, right on the main drag. they're going through, uh, guerneville and, and they're trying to help people with the needs that they might have. here's what one of the folks down there had to tell us. i think if they cleaned out the creek a little bit better and, uh, from this end down and put a burm up a good thick burm high burm from flooding allime is flooded. uh,s probably, uh, going to be flooded for quite some time because now you have all of this water coming from out of the hills. uh russian river is 1500mi!s of drainage. that's a lot of drainage. and as a result , all of this water is coming down. so the flood warning continues, uh, for some while. but again, it's local stream flooding. nothing with the russian r

you can see in and around that guerneville and great an area.ivers there are under a warning until about 4 o'clock today as we see some of that still rise. has that runoff heads into our creeks, streams and rivers. but for the most part, the bulk of this has passed us by and we are going to get a little clearing as we get into the afternoon. those be in the south bay. obviously you are seeing that clearing the last ones to do want to mention to, again, still having some of that snow headed for the sierra. so if you are on those roads, not a great place to be right now. as you can see that mix between snow and rain still happening there. so still a little bit unsettled here. it's out of the question that we see a few sprinkles row by. but for the most part, as we look at futurecast and we go through this evening, you can see it just becomes clouds as we get into the night. and then tomorrow we actually get some some actual sunshine and at least for a little bit throughout our tuesday, you can see what happens here overnight tuesday into wednesday

then the russian river also overflowing its banks right on to rio and guerneville. that's a flood warning up there as well. so a lot going on out there. multiple days of rainfall will do that. and we're certainly not done with the rain just yet. we're still seeing active showers moving into san francisco in marin county. and in there, some moderate to even heavy pockets of rain right in the middle of the morning commute. so if you're heading into san francisco right now, be wary of those increase showers in some standing water possible on roads. little calmer for the south bay right now, although from san leandro, as you head over, i've 80 towards the tri valley, you're actively seeing some showers right around dublin and livermore. now we will be seeing spotty showers remaining through the remainder of the day and this afternoon amid some peeks of sunshine, interspersed by some dark clouds in especially for the inland east bay, a chance of isolated thunderstorm development. here's 05:15pm. those little yellow to orange pockets indicating some convection, some thund

localized flooding in areas like on to rio in guerneville. we've got will tran on his way up to the scene and he's going to be giving us a live look here in just a few minutes. radar does show you a lot of snow in the sierra, nevada and most of that heavy rainfall now moving out to the east and the south. we are still seeing some active spots on the radar for areas like san jose now towards santa clara, sunnyvale, as well as on up towards milpitas. but you'll notice a lot of the bay has quieted down a little bit. we'll still continue to see spotty showers, but a little bit of good news for our of us as we're getting up this morning as we are starting to see that activity, diminishing just a bit. current temps are mostly in the mid 50's. so get those rain jackets on. that should be about the only layer additional air that you need this morning. spotty showers and the chance of a roll of thunder or 2 this afternoon. i'll be keeping you updated as we go. brittany begley in this morning with a look what's the you know, the roads are wet mess. we'

this is on church street basically right off of downtown guerneville. and you can see the damage already done. look at that refrigerator. it floated from inside when the garages it appears into the middle of street and it's been topsy-turvy moving around all morning, even though the water is going down at this particular time. now, let me show you video from the overnight hours. it got so high right now in the middle of the morning, the waters going down where it's about halfway up, the rims of cars. but in the overnight hours, it got so high that it was about door handle level. it went into nearby homes, the mobile homes, the apartments causing people to get a knock at the door, telling them by the fire department. you have to leave it simply too dangerous at this particular time. i can tell you there's a nearby creek said not only that, the water puddle on the parking lot or in the parking lot at this location. it caused the creek to rise spill all that water into the neighborhoods. by the way, we just found out this morning that the water is so bad,

alright guerneville and anybody who lives near a creek or river.thing could be a little bit concerned by this one. let's get the latest on the forecast. john, i know you've been watching those river levels. absolutely. and small stream flooding. definitely a possibility here. you can see that green up in mendocino. lake county is those are areas where flood advisories will go into effect. >> and a lot of eyes are particularly on the russian river right now. it's definitely not that high current level at around 9 feet in flood stage is all the way up to 32 feet. but by the time we reach monday, all this rain fall on those hillsides in sonoma county as well as the rest of the north bay. could britain the russian river reached 25 feet, which is getting pretty close to that flood stage. so those water levels going to be something we're all watching as we do approach the tail end of this weekend. right now we're nice and dry. but this afternoon showers arrive and really after 02:00pm becomes more and more widespread for us. the jet stream set up shop ri
