joining us is author jeff guinn. he has written extensively about the murders.ur reaction to governor newsom potentially allowing van houten to get out on parole? >> i have to admit i'm surprised. i did not think that any california governor would risk public backlash by letting any member of the manson family out of prison. he was not cooperating on letting her out three times previously, but now she might be free. >> what is different this time? >> van houten has been in prison now for just over 53 years. during that time she completed an undergraduate college degree and graduate degree and she has taught classes to inmates at the prison where she's confined. she hadn't shown any disinclination to take blame for what happened back in 1969. she was even briefly released in 1976 while there was a retrial for her. so when she was much younger, she was out and free for several months and nothing untoward happened. it's certainly not likely to happen now. >> for those who may not be familiar with her role with the manson family, what did leslie van houten actually
