take this product and have it done in new jersey pennsylvania but the best facility down in the gulf coast and also where export facilities are so. i understand this the opposition to the pipeline is producing some on usual alliances and. you know this pipeline started off the opposition came from landowners like a lot of pipeline battles you know you have an out of state pipeline company coming represented coming and saying he wants to use your land for an easy. and to build the pipeline so landowners were getting a little concerned they realized this wasn't about natural gas even this is about what's classified as a hazardous material natural gas liquids it's these chemicals that are highly flammable so landowners started having the poison and poison as well yeah and so landowners started getting very concerned you know this pipe and we were running through their land so a lot of them refused to sign easements environmentalists saw what was going on they jumped into the fray so you have the states you know local sierra club chapter . for the commonwealth and this kind of strange coalitio

gulf coast area. another 25 are on the u.s. gulf coast. we call25 are in what the midwest, and then the rest are in the rocky mountains, and onew are still holding on the east coast. the problem is that the product coming out of the production fields needs to be able to get nothese refining centers once in a while, not once a week. every single hour of every single day, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. all of these refining o,mpanies, something called s& which stands for supply and optimization. these guys, these are all of the crude slates i have coming in here. my job is to make sure that for every refinery i have responsibility for, i am feeding that refinery a steady diet of the types of crude that that refinery is configured for to run optimally. each refinery is different. not all refineries are created equal. some are built for light sweet, some are built for heavy sour. we are investing a tremendous amount of money, hundreds of billions of dollars, to be able to manufacture and optimize different types of these crudes that we are

-- from canada to gulf coast refineries in the u.s., you're accelerating climate change both because you are speeding development in the oil sands region and also because you're increasing the united states dependence on fossil fuels. and one very interesting fact is that while this technical document suggests that this one project would not have a significant global carbon impact-- impact, the state department is making it very clear that they're still looking at how this pipeline decision sits in to-- fits into the broader national and international climate strategy that the president is pursuingment and so they're making it clear that this is not the final word even on what is the climate impact of this project. >> so what are they going to be looking at going forward here. they still must decide whether it's in the so-called national interest, right? how is that being defined. >> that's a very broad line, actually. and so it can include everything including our energy security. in other words, what does it mean to have the supply coming from canada as opposed to other countries.

that we discovered in the past five years, and just like a pipeline going to refineries in the gulf coastlng facilities to ship this gas out. this country is going to become energy independent by the year 2020, all due to the work that oil andappens in the gas industry. we are a world country. we do not believe in putting up stops for competition, so why are we not shipping our products around the world? we have been shipping oil from the middle east all of our adult lives, and the fact that this country can now be energy independent, what a great situation for our children and grandchildren. >> i look at the share price. a great run in 2013, way outperforming the broader market, doing well this year, up about 20%. how do you justify those gains? what are we going to get that will support this share price? >> our stock performance has been the direct result of our ability to find these quantities of oil and gas, and we have now honed in on the marsalis, where we announced on friday the biggest well in the play, 32.5 million unique feet of gas per day. so we believe we have found a resourc

gulf coast. no one has more at stake in this decision in the ceo of transcanada.is developing the pipeline and joins me now from canada. did you rate out the champagne? >> it is premature for breaking that out just yet, but it is encouraging. the pipeline does not have an effect on the environment or omissions. >> there's no word yet on when president obama will decide and the epa has yet to weigh in. what are you thinking? >> i'm hoping it's relatively soon. everything that needs to be reviewed has been reviewed and we have agreed to dozens of conditions. they have approved pipeline safety and the route has been approved in nebraska. the final conclusion with respect to greenhouse gases was settled with the environmental impact statement. we think we are good to go. certainly this thing creates jobs. people criticize the number, but it is the number and it certainly enhances u.s. energy security if you can bring more barrels from a continental servers ash continental source. >> many analysts are much more pessimistic than you, especially with the midterm election

pumps oil from the canadian province alberta all the way to american refineries in texas along the gulf coast. the keystone xl is a 1,179-mile long expansion, repeat, expansion of the existing pipeline that canada wants built through the u.s. it is unfinished routes shown on the map as the dotted line. at its peek, a potential 830,000 barrels of crude oil per day could flow to the gulf. but the keystone xl has run into delays and opposition. conservationists fear habitat destruction and some native american tribes fear dirty water will accumulate on tribal land. and also others notably environmental groups, they believe the pipeline will accelerate development of canada's oil sands and so doing it, intensify greenhouse gas emissions. a long awaited u.s. state department report has ruled that greenhouse gas emissions would not be significantly affected. why? because canada will develop its oil sands anyway with or without the new keystone pipeline. and there's more. notably the well informed ken salazar, a former colorado senator who served as president obama's cabinet interior secretary for f

east coast and gulf coast, island nations around the world, some of which will literally be submerged by that amount of sea level rise. the ipcc makes a far more conservative statement. they state an upper bound of about a meter, about 3 feet, and it's once again an example of where the ipcc arguably has been overly conservative. some as myself have argued that partly that's just due to the culture of science. scientists tend to be reticent. we don't like to make strong conclusions that we have to withdraw at some later time. and there's also a component, i believe, due to the pressure, the outside pressure, the critics, a very well-funded and well-organized effort to literally discredit the science of climate change sometimes by attempting to discredit the scientists themselves. i myself have been a victim of that. and in the face of all that pressure and those attacks, i think to some extent the ipcc has actually withdrawn a bit, and they've been more guarded, more conservative, more reticent in what they're willing to conclude than they really should be given the evidence. and argu
