i'm just going to briefly introduce the report and then amanda guma from our office will walk you through details and we have hammond smith who will also be available for questions. we were asked to prepare a scientific research on the health risks associated with the consumption of sugar sweet and beverages. that's largely pertaining to obesity and diabetes and taking a look at the financial risk for the san francisco residents. we have prepared analysis that identify cost that the city and county itself incurs and then the population of the city as a whole incurs that is separate from the city. finally we are asked to review and report on policies explored and implemented by other cities either in terms of a tax on soda or other initiatives that have been under taken to address this issue. so that's the overview of the purpose of our report and now amanda guma will walk you through the details. >> thank you to hamilton smith for the work on this. >> thank you supervisors. as several of you have already noted there is extensive scientific evidence that we found in our research on the con

. >> i had a question, from what miss guma and mr. smith looked at, are there other questions that we need to answer to help policy making? >> that's a great question. as i mentioned this is a huge you -- issue and so some things that i know i have heard from other scientist who have been in inquiring from me with regards to impact of sugary drinks, folks have brought to my attention with impacts on oral health specifically with children in terms of oral health. we have tremendous oral health disparity in san francisco. we have a lack of access to dentistry especially those that will take government subsidized dental insurance. that may change. i know the center for health serves the portola and bayview and there is limited access there. we also know that immigrant populations in particular, asian and latino immigrant children also suffer much higher rates of dental carries or cavities. so being able to quantified the impact of sugar ary drinks on children's oral health will help us get a better picture of broad impact of sugary drink

my name is amanda guma and i'm here to provide a brief presentation on our audits and findings recommendations. on 9th, we were directed to conduct an audit with the effectiveness of recruitment, hiring and promotion at the san francisco fire department as well as to look at the overtime staffing practices at the fire department. we are initiated our project on july 23rd. our report was released on january 13th, it includes 6 findings and 19 recommendations. the fire department of current structured has 43 fire stations and three stations at san francisco international airport and station 49 which the station from ambulances are deployed throughout the city. they're currently as of october 2013, ,131,393 unformed employees at the fire department. 1,070 are in fire suppression and 323 are in emergency medical services. the fire department has the fifth largest department budget in the city. and its resources are derived from the general fund. total projected expenditures for the fire department and fiscal year totalled on -- >> we're having a technical glitch here. in 1997, the city's ems emerg

guma referred to others. these are ones that we see from tremendous impacts with sugary drinks. i will take questions. >> that is a really helpful presentation. you mentioned a statistic that we talked about before that a 12 ounce can of soda has 9 teaspoons of sugar and 17 ounces and a 20 ounces bottle. you showed a slide the biggest of the big gulps. so for example the teen gulp at 7-eleven, i hadn't heard of that one. 128 ounces. that would put us at over 100 teaspoons depending on how much ice the person would put in there. it could be more than 100 teaspoons of sugar in one beverage. even if you go down to the king size burger king, that would be 45 teaspoons of sugar? >> yes. i think that's about right. >> i think if you would ask any person particularly a parent, but i think for example a parent or anyone, would you sit down with a bag of sugar and eat it whether it's 15 or 20 or 40 or maybe 100 teaspoons of sugar, i think most people would find that to be pretty compulsive and not to mention in incredibly unhealthy. it's such a useful sight in terms of the sizes and the
