what we do have are more guns and more access to guns, and more access to guns that kill more people more quickly. so that when mental health is brought up as an issue, there is no doubt that there are times when people with mental health issues are more at risk for harming themselves or other people, and we know based on the science when some of those times are, and there are interventions that can be put in place to protect people from themselves and protect other people at those times, nothing ever works 100%, but we can certainly do a better job than we are doing now. what i would say is that the strongest connection between mental illness and guns is actually suicide. of those 35,000, 36,000 people who die from gun violence, two thirds of those are firearm suicides. it is the second leading cause of death of teenagers in this country is firearm suicides. teenagers not old enough to buy guns who are using the guns that their parents own, and i have talked to those parents, and that is another club that nobody wants to join, for sure. when we have evidence that tells us when there

that cannot happen on guns. what should happen next after the meeting -- for the last several days, our democratic caucus has been discussing the issue of gun safety and what congress to debate and pass. we've come together on a comprehensive three-part plan that we're announcing today. first, we believe that congress must pass tough legislation that closes existing loopholes in the background check system at a minimum, that legislation should close the gun show and internet sales loopholes. not having background checks at gun shows, is is like checking ids at the luck core store but not at the bar it makes no sense. when i wrote it gun shows were not nearly as popular as they are tad. if we also a must close the internet sale of guns without background checks when we wrote the brady law there was no internet so, obviously, there was no prohibition. we need to close these loopholes and update our background checks systems to make it truly comprehensive. now many democrats would like to do more than just close th
