[ gunfire ] >> there you heard the somewhat confusing exchange of gunfire that we believe that was the exchange of gunfire around the road block. miguel marquez was at the scene. he joins me now. assuming you've not heard any new information in the last ten minutes or so, take a step back and walk me through the timeline and sequence of events that we know about that occurred several hour ago up to now. >> what officials here have just announced that around 12:30, 1:00 today pacific time they got a call from individuals who had been tied up. a car was stolen from there. a white pickup truck. they said the person who stole it matched the description of christopher dorner. a short time later, two officials from -- two wardens from game and fish, amazingly enough, who were helping san bernardino county sheriff's office came in contact with mr. dorner. there were shots fired. neither was injured. mr. dorner went on foot. he ended up in this cabin holed up there when law enforcement deputies from san bernardino county sheriff's office arrived he opened fire on them. one of them was killed.

officials say the suspect exchanged gunfire with law enforcement. [ sound of gunfire ] the break in the case came less than fire hours ago. >> they received a call of a stolen vehicle in the 1200 block of club view drive. when they responded there they received information from the person reporting that the stolen vehicle was stolen by an individual that appeared to be very similar to christopher dorner. >> reporter: a short time later authorities found the stolen pickup truck. >> this individual barricaded himself in one of the cabins there and an exchange of gunfire occurred. during that exchange of gunfire two officers were injured. >> reporter: now the l.a. times is reporting one of those officers has died. sheriffs have now surrounded the cabin we heard on police scanners authorities have requested a special armored vehicle. the federal aviation administration has declared the area around the cabin a no fly zone. authorities say they don't want the suspect to know their tactics. roadblocks were set up around big bear and schools were in lockdown. he began his run from the law on fe

one deputy was killed in that gunfire and another wounded.com. >>> one officer is injured after a chase and shooting in the east bay. police say the suspect had several outstanding warrants. kpix 5's anne makovec is in pittsburg this morning with the officer's condition. how's he doing? >> reporter: he is going to be okay. that is the good news that came out of this story overnight. he has been treated and released after being shot. but the roads are still blocked off here in pittsburg as you can see on maple and 12th streets as police tried to determine how many shots were fired and they are still interviewing witnesses here, as well. it all started around 11:30 last night. two officers tried to talk to a man who was standing by a car. they say he took off on foot. they chased him. and then they say he started shooting at them. that's when the one officer was hit. officers fired back at him. they hit him. he is in the hospital in stable condition. though say he had several warrants out for his arrests. >> our officers do an outstanding job e

a short time later, the suspect died in a barrage of police gunfire nearby. tonight, we're learning more about him and the murdered officers. a news conference just wrapped up a few minutes ago. kpix5's kit doe was there. kit. >> the press conference ended ten minutes ago. he said sometime around 3:30 today, two santa cruz police detectives were conducting a followup investigation and then they started talking to a man by the name of jeremy. they don't know what happened, but he pulled out a gun and killed both officers outside of the home. the officers were able to call for help. neighbors called for help and that's when authorities started arriving on scene. he fled the scene, officers went into an active shooter mode where they start looking for him. they made contact with him, they say he opened fire, they returned fire and killed him on the scene. at that point, they started searching the neighborhood for a second possible suspect. we spoke with the police chief with santa cruz police and today was the first time the department suffered such a loss. >> t

[ gunfire ] [ gunfire ] >> get down! >> what that tells us, obviously, a lot of gunfire over an extended period. we know that the suspect is suspected to have 30 weapons. we know he's trained. we believe this would have been the gunfire volley that led to the two deputies being injured and now being medevaced for emergency medical services. and that is what took us up to this point, where now the suspect is inside, but we don't know whether he's alone. there are varied reports we're hearing about, about how this happened. but we just really don't know. and we have to take the fact that the authorities are being very cautious to mean that they may suspect there is more potential life at risk. >> it sounded like a war that was going on, that gun battle we just heard. >> certainly a lot of activity. you could hear one person yelling to the reporter, get the "f" out of here, and the reporter, apparently his local station tried to make contact with him, wasn't able to make contact with him, but later learned he was doing fine
