but instead, the gunman opened fire, hitting a 15-year-old girl. witnesses tell our affiliates that she screamed for help. she said there was a shooter. we just checked in with the hospital this morning, and they can only say she is still in critical condition. we do know she underwent surgery yesterday. a lot of thoughts and prayers with her and her family. initially, officials thought there might have been another student shot, as well. well, it turns out that second student just happened to be right next to the first victim. and that student was covered in blood from the 15-year-old girl. but was not shot. so just a glimpse of good news in all of this. obviously, a terrifying situation for all of the students here. here's how one student described moments right after the shooting. >> we heard, you know, just a really big bang. our class really thought nothing of it, you know? just one. and 10 seconds later, three more, just consecutively in a row. there was screaming. we heard someone yell, "help me, help me, we need help." and after that, the e

the gunman came into the school and immediately asked for the location of a very specific teacher ande named that teacher by name. when the teacher heard that this individual is asking for him, the teacher exited the school immediately. >> reporter: that say police may have confused the gunman and bought time for law enforcement, but shots were fired. a student identified as a 15- year-old girl was critically wounded. >> at first we were all like what was that like every student was really confused and then like we heard two more shots. >> reporter: a second student received minor injuries. then with police on the way the gunman turned his weapon on himself. >> our initial investigation is causing us to believe that this shooting was the result of revenge on the farther of the shooter because of a confrontation or a disagreement between the shooter and the teacher. >> reporter: the shooting happened just 8 miles from columbine high school. also close by, the aurora movie theater where 12 people were gunned down last year. police say two incendiary devices described as molotov cocktail

seconds later i saw another manager with a gunman in the pharmacy area. the gunman saw me. i saw him. >> hovan moves back to call 911 but the gunman hurtles over the counter. hovan draws the handgun he legally carries in a concealed holster during every shift. the robber appears to fire his weapon, although it doesn't go off. >> the gunman repeatedly attempted to fire upon me. i feared for my life. and in self-defense, i fired my weapon as i continued to move from him. >> he shoots three times missing the robber who drops his weapon and flees with his accomplice. another employee picks up the dropped gun. if hovan expects praise for his vigilante actions, he doesn't get it from his employer. instead, he's fired. walgreens says hovan violated its workplace violence policy which prohibits employees from possessing firearms on company property. hovan obtained his concealed weapons permit after being held up in a 2007 robbery at the same store. he admits he did not notify his employer, and he says he was unaware of its policy. hovan is now suing walgreens for unfair dismissal.
