luke's with more on the tense moments yesterday before that gunman was killed. anne. >> reporter: today we are hoping to learn more about this man as background and why he might have done what he did. he was here at the construction zone behind me at cesar chavez and valencia. police say he was pointing his gun at st. luke's hospital which is right next door and also pointing his gun at police. it all came to a head on top of the construction zone where police say that man was pointing one gun and he was in possession of two guns. one gun he had stolen earlier in the day from the big 5 store in san bruno. here's what police are saying on the radios as they shot and killed that man.

the gunman is described as a white male. police say the shooter barricaded himself inside the facility. he apparently had several items with him and officers are trying to figure out what those items are and were they dangerous. police say at this point they don't know why he chose the parenthood building. more on this, jim >> reporter: of course those things, those devices that the suspect left behind are the priority right now as police begin to process this entire scene. the strip mall where all this took place is just on the other side of this major road here. the mayor was here, just a short time ago. he spoke to the crowd. he said he was going to the hospital now to talk to the victims, and some of their families. he spoke to reports who talked about the condition and how proud he is of his community resolving this over the course of the past five hours. he was able to talk to us here just a short time ago. >>> the perpetrator is in custody. the situation has been resolved. there's no continuing peril to the citizens.

they are just trying to contain the situation by getting this gunman. last we heard they were still exchanging gunfire. also i'm told that an emergency operations center has been set up there on the scene. we saw the mobile unit in some of the video. so that will help facilitate and coordinate the various law enforcement officers that are there on the ground to help in order to ensure that there's not chaos and that everyone is communicating and coordinating effectively. and i just want to point out here, brianna, just in the last week an intelligence bulletin was sent out from the fbi and dhs. it was a terrorism bulletin, but it still applies to this because it asked local law enforcement and federal law enforcement, state law enforcement to review active shooter protocol. this is something that these police departments train for. they coordinate their efforts and drills. just this week they were asked to review that protocol and now they're putting their training into use with what appears to be this active shooter situation there at that planned pare
