sanjay gupta. before we talk about 2012, i wanted to take time to reflect on stories and people that caught my attention and changed the world over this past year. january 8, gunfire at a campaign event for congresswoman gabrielle giffords. six people were killed. >> anyone injured? did you say gabrielle giffords was hit? >> she's hit. she's breathing. >> the congresswoman is shot in the head but survives. >> she was exceedingly lucky, right? when i saw the trajectory of where one hole was and the other hole was, i was like oh, my gosh. however -- >> because it was so far apart. >> it wasn't a little thing it went through a lot. >> three and a half months later the first public steps in the congresswoman's remarkable recovery. in 2011, i tried to put a spotlight on big hits in the brain finding growing evidence that football puts young people at serious risk and professional players as well. in february former chicago bears safety david duerson committed suicide. he left his brain to research. when

sanjay gupta is a neurosurgeon, he's treated many gunshot victims.s story closely. it is amazing how far she's come. you can hear, though, she still struggles stringing together multiple sentences. is that typical? >> yeah. it's hard to believe it's been just over a year now anderson. what i would say as a starting point, her recovery was pretty atypical, so many people who have gunshot wounds at close range to the head don't survive let alone have any meaningful neurological recovery. in that sense, she was in the top few percent in terms of recovery. you're right on in terms of her speech, you heard that sort of halting speech, at times searching for words. that is pretty typical. take a look at this animation. you alluded to this in your piece here. a gunshot wound to the head like, the left side of the brain. you can see the bullet went in and out. that's important for a couple of reasons. a lot of the energy from the bullet did not release inside her skull but released into air after passing through. that was probably beautiful to -- beneficial

sanjay gupta found something incredible.nic thing is that nathan didn't start football until he was in seventh grade because he didn't want to get hurt. >> reporter: it was october 28, 2010. the last game of his senior year, the best game of his career. he ran for two touchdown, 165 yards in just the first two quarters. and then two minutes before halftime, he walked off the field. screamed that his head hurt and he collapsed. nathan died early the next morning. nathan died of second impact syndrome. in an earlier game, he got a concussion. everyone, including his doctor, thought he had healed. >> i was here in shock. >> i couldn't look at this book for a long time. >> reporter: the styles would find meaning in nathan's tragic death because of this woman. >> i think the last time you were here we had maybe five brains, now we're up to, we're in the 90s. >> reporter: dr. ann mckee runs the world's largest brain bank. it's a joint project between the veterans administration and boston university. i first met her several years

sanjay gupta.ll talk about the dangers of concussions while playing football. >> let's talk about the dangers. it is more dangerous than people think? and can it be made, after all, it's sportsment it's football. you're hitting. that's the nature of it. >> it's a violent sport. it is always going to be that way, i think. there are two things. there are a lot of things in the documentary. one is if you have a concussion and then you get a second concussion while first one is healing, you turn a bad situation into potentially a catastrophic situation. if you have a bruise on your arm and somebody hits you, the next day somebody hits new that same spot, it would hurt a lot more. it's going to heal from the first hit, no doubt. but that second hit hurts that much more. that i of think of your brain the same way. inflame, swollen. but if it gets a second hit, it becomes a really bad situation. and number two, you know, the 650 hits a season when we really dissected a season of a high school football tea
