sanjay gupta's report miles o'brien, a life lost and found.er cnn anchor now cnn contributor. after he suffered a life-changing accident hard to believe a little more than a year ago. he was on assignment in the philippines when a case of equipment fell and hit his arm. left a nasty bruise but he ignored it. that seemingly minor accident resulted in him losing his arm and, in fact, almost cost him his life. dr. sanjay gupta is here to talk about it. it's important to point out, he's your friend. this is a pal of yours. someone we know very well. >> we journalists don't do that very often. this is someone i know well. he's a science guy at cnn for a long time. he was the rocket scientist, i was the brain surgeon. we had a lot of fun with that. >> sure. >> we're just interested in the same things. i think like many people maybe me even more so when i heard the news i literally -- it was like someone punched me in the gutt. it took the wind out of me. >> i imagine. >> the opportunity to be able to tell his story, what happened but also the recove

sanjay gupta says it does speak to the potential severity of the illness.e spoke with our poppy harlow and say it is possible that lubitz could have had a mental break down the day of the crash. >> it's hard to know, obviously. and you also have this cockpit recording where he's not saying anything. he doesn't appear to be actively hallucinating in terms of what he's expressing. he's not in a manic phase. he's not in a manic phase. he's just breathing in a controlled fashion. but you can have a situation where essentially, your mind is racing. you're having all these different things going on in your mind. some of them in a psychotic sort of frame of mind, but not expressing it outwardly. that is quite possible. so there is, it is a break with reality. i think what surprised me the most and surprised a lot of the experts we've spoken to about this as well, is there was no expression, nothing, nothing that he said outward lay. he could have been having conversations with people all day and not had, they may not have picked up on any clues because of that. bu

sanjay gupta, chief medical correspondent.alk about you and i were talking about watching the report. you don't like the transcript of this exchange between the pilot and the co-pilot have been released. why? >> no because the transcript the cockpit voice recorder it's in the investigation and it's released at the end. it's always released. it's not as if this has got key information hidden away a transparency issue. we all knew what it said the prosecutors remarks last week told us every single fact. all we got was the release of the transcript was heart rendering details, which makes it much more unpleasant for the families. we done get a salient new fact. that's the important thing to remember about this. >> sanjay i want to talk to you about ba we have learned about the co-pilot and his mental health. according to reports, investigators when they went into his apartment found anti-depressant medication. sim li larry, according to other reports, he was on some psychotic drugs he had generalized anxiety disorder. in 2009 he

let's get perspective now from chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta who joins us. the new york times, wall street journal all reported the co-pilot treated for depression of some time and then this report back in 2009 when he left training that there was a major depressive episode. could depression alone result in someone doing something like this? there's certainly a huge number of people out there who struggle with depression, have struggled with depression and don't end up taking their own life or killing others. >> it is unlikely that depression alone would lead to this sort of behavior, to answer your question directly, anderson. people who have major depressive episodes, if they are going to be violent in any way, if they're going to hurt somebody in any way, it's usually hurting themselves and if there's loss of life, usually because of suicide, not homicide. that's what we know from depression alone. if there was a personality disorder that was superimposed on top of this, you have to think there was something else sort of going on here. so we just don't kn
