sanjay gupta joins us. how much do we know about his condition? >> we're just hearing from the hospital after he came out of surgery, which was sort of midafternoon around 2:30, 3:00, that he was in critical condition. that's obviously concerning. we saw images of him, you may remember, at the scene. we hear that that time at the scene, he was stable. he was actually able to speak to his wife on the phone. he was transported by helicopter to the hospital. five to ten minute transfer. by the time he arrived, he was in critical condition. obviously, he seems to have some deterioration during that time. was in surgery for several hours. still in critical condition. this is obviously the job of the nurses and doctors to try to care for him and stabilize him, which is i'm sure what they are trying to do. there was a gunshot wound to the hip. no vital organs in the area. but there can be significant bleeding. >> matt mika, a lobbyist practicing with the team, i understand he is in critical condition after being shot in the chest. what can you say about

gupta join us now. let's talk about steve scalise.nges when operating on a wound around the hip. there are certainly a lot of organs around there. >> the trajectory of the bullet and pelvis and abdomen. the biggest concern brian was referring to is the bleeding, blood vessels, when you're talking about a rifle injury, not necessarily the bullet actually strikes the blood vessels, it creates a wave, they call it cavitation they can affect blood vessels some distance away. that's one of the challenges. you know where the injuries should be and you have to look to other places for the sources of the bleeding. they have to sometimes stage a procedure. at some point you know you haven't completed what you need to complete, you have to stop and the reason being, let the patient recover from this part of the operation, give them some blood products back, make sure their blood is still clotting. that's a cycle that may continue for the next few days for him. >> he's still in critical condition after this third surgery. what does that tell you

gupta is with us. he's a neuro surgeon. as you just heard extensive brain damage shows no current signs of botulism, what do you think could have happened? >> when you talk about the degree of brain damage that he had and it's tough to talk about but it was sort of involving all of his brain, that really indicates that something caused a lack of oxygenated blood to the brain and usually in someone whose this young, he's 22 years old, it's more likely to be a respiratory arrest. for some reason he wasn't breathing, he wasn't getting enough oxygen into his body, eventually that caused his heart to not pump enough blood to his brain and that's what caused the cell death in his brain. that seems to be what happened but what exactly caused him to stop breathing in the first place to cause that respiratory arrest? we don't know. they're pretty -- they were pretty certain. they were asked about bot ulism. there was no evidence of that even more than a year later, so they just don't know. was it some other toxin? was it an injury t

sanjay gupta. he is going to tell us about encouraging news about congressman steve scalise. he is our chief medical correspondent. update us on the condition at this hour. >> there is good news about the congressman. they say he has improved over the last 24 hours. he is still in critical condition. i think we talked about this last night. people think a gun shot wound to the hip maybe not be as concerning. it can be a very serious injury. that is why you are hearing that he has had a couple of operations and other procedures. there are blood vessels in this area. when you have a rifle wound, a bullet wound from a rifle, that is a high velocity injury. that means not only do you follow the trajectory of the bullet but also creates a blast injury or cavitation injury as it is called. that is what the doctors have been focussing on trying to understand the extent of the injuries stopping that bleeding. this is not unexpected that he would have more than one operation because sometimes you just stop operating to allow the patient to recover from the operation, give some blood p
