sanjay gupta is sonnian s sanjay, are there risks?> they recommended take a couple of weeks before you fly. two weeks. not an exact rule here. he had a really quick recovery. his operation on july 14th, home the next day. that sort of, really, gives a sense it won't be as risky certainly to fly. the biggest concern, just so you know, is when -- this is true of any operation. that you can develop pockets of air after an operation, and with lower pressure, that air will expand. can happen after joint surgery, for example. can happen in the brain. but the doctors are not that concern and don't think there's significant amounts of air. this is how the conversation went, john. we don't necessarily recommend this but won't get in your way either. >> let me ask you a question. maybe outside of your bounds, you're a neurosurgeon. what about the psychology? we know senator mccain wants to be in the arena. somebody with a diagnose, not a great diagnosis, not looking three, five years down the road but the here and now. how much does that play i

let's bring in sanjay gupta. mccain has a long history with skin cancer.n to what treatment he might consider? >> it's a great question, two points about that. first of all, sometimes the treatment for other cancers, such as if you got radiation for another cancer, can increase your chances of developing something like this. i looked into that, and i reviewed his medical records back in 2008, it doesn't sound like that was the case. he didn't receive radiation at that time. that probably didn't increase his chances. so really shouldn't affect what treatment options are available to him. typically, it's chemotherapy and radiati radiation, sort of specified to that part of the brain. in combination, but there are other treatments, there's about 150 clinical trials, ongoing right now, jake, looking at all sorts of different things from vaccines to viral vectors to the polio virus as a potential sort of treatment. there may be various options. >> we shouldn't sugar coat, this is going to be a tough battle for the senator. you obviously mentioned chemotherapy a

sanjay gupta is joining us now. sanjay, this came as a shock to everyone.s wonderful to see he is a fighter just on twitter. you spoke with senator mccain's doctors. what did they say? how is he doing? >> he's recovering extraordinarily well. he had brain surgery last friday, he's 80 years old, he had general anesthesia. doctors told me as soon as he woke up he was cracking jokes and doing well. he spent the night in the intensive care unit last friday, but was discharged to home saturday, which is speedy by any account, especially given the fact he's 80 years old. he's recovering well. what happens, typically, it takes a few days to be certain from the pathologist exactly what caused this bleeding and they found out over the last day or so, in fact, it was this brain cancer, as you mentioned, a type of cancer known as glioblastoma. it's a tumor that bled. that's what caused the bleeding. it's a brain cancer meaning it comes from the brain itself as opposed to elsewhere in the body and spreading to the brain. that was a surprise, i think to everyone. the do

sanjay gupta joining us on the phone. sanjay, you know senator mccain's medical history very well.mined his medical records when he ran for president in 2008. give us a sense how serious this latest procedure was. >> wolf, when you read the initial descriptions it didn't sound that serious. you heard about an incision sort of in and around the eyebrow, and removal of a blood clot. what we've learned, though, i think, a statement released an incision made around the left eyebrow of senator mccain. you feel the left eyebrow, feel that bone behind there. that bone was actually removed. called a craniotomy. you do that to gain access to the brain. so this blood clot that they call it, five centimeters in size, was located in, or inside or just on top of the brain. that's a pretty significant procedure to expose the brain like that. we heard that he's doing well after the operation. that bone was placed back so, you know, he's -- that bone is now back in the appropriate position in the skull. the big question is, what exactly was that? abnormali abnormality. say a blood clot. was it cau

sanjay gupta reports. explain what you've learned. >> just over the last couple of hours, i've had a chance to hear what transpired over the last several days. we heard that senator mccain went in the hospital on friday, had surgery, but are getting the details of what happened. take a listen. senator john mccain is recovering well after an operation last friday to remove a malignant brain tumor. with his permission, i spoke to two of his doctors about the details of his care. mccain had come in for a scheduled an you will physical friday morning with no complaints except intermittent double vision and fatigue, which he attributed to an intention travel schedule over the last several months. his doctors ordered a cat scan. upon review, doctors called mccain, who left the hospital, and asked him to immediately return for an mri. the scans revealed a five centimeter blood clot above his left eye. the decision was made to perform an urgent operation. by 3:00 p.m., he was undergoing surgery to remove a tumor.

sanjay gupta joins us now. sanjay, what have you learned? spoke to his doctors at the mayo clinic earlier today, and they said the operation he had on friday revealed that he has a glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer. that was what was causing his problems, omting above his left eye. this is the type of primary brain cancer. they didn't

sanjay gupta. president trump is waying in with his thoughts and sympathies for the family. sanjay, you had a chance to speak exclusively with mccain's doctor, with his permission about what he is facing. >> yeah. what we learned is senator mccain was feeling tired, fatigued the last few months, but nothing specific. he went in friday morning, this past friday for a routine check up, prescheduled. complained of fatigue and he had a little bit of double vision. it was enough for the doctors to order a c.a.t. scan, which ordered the blood collection. that day, he was in the operating room having that blood clot taken out through the incision above the eyebrow. as you point out now, and as we have heard, the blood collection, that bleeding was caused by a tumor. the tumor is known as a glioblastoma, a type of brain tumor, an aggressive type of cancer. that news is coming out as you reported. we know senator mccain and his family are talking ability his next steps. he is at home and recovering well, they tell me. that is what they are facing. >> this is the same kind of cancer t

we know sanjay gupta looked at this, but this research from boston university, this is more than guysus expected to learn. >> that's right. it's definitely concerning for the game of football. researchers at boston university studied the donated brains of 111 deceased former nfl players. they found 110 of them were found to have a degenerative brain disease cte, more than 99%. cte was diagnosed in 87% of 2002 former football players studied, including high school and college players. cte is believed to be caused by repeated trauma to the head. it can only be diagnosed in someone after death. it's important to note that in this study many of the donated brains came from former players and their families who were worried about cte while the player was still alive. lead author of the study said there are many questions that remain unanswered like how common is this and how many years of football are too many. the nfl issued a statement saying these studies are important for advancing science related to head trauma and the league will continue to work with a wide range of experts to impro

gupta joins us. what do we know about senator mccain's surgery? what was it for?> what the hospital statement basically said was to remove a blood collection from just above his eye. but in more detail what it was an incision in the eyebrow basically to hide the incision, but then to gain access to the bone. you feel the bone right behind your eyebrow. that's the frontal bone. they wanted to remove the bone to get access to his brain. it was a bigger operation than was originally described. this is the bone we are talking about in here. you can remove a piece of the bone here, in this area, left frontal area. this is a way to gain access to the brain, and this was the area of the brain you then gain access to, the left frontal area over here. again, what they said, anderson, is he had about a five centimeter blood collection. that's about two inches. so you just saw what i showed you from the end of this ruler to the end of my finger, that's two inches. pretty sizable blood collection in brain, but that's what they said they were removing. they have sent that off

sanjay gupta. sanjay is with us live with the latest. start with what the doctors discovered and then move on to the prognosis. >> sure. you know, you remember john, last friday, senator mccain went in for a routine visit. a scheduled visit but complained he'd been feeling fatigued the last few months, had a bout of double vision. whatever it was doctors were concerned enough to get a cat stan. that showed a blood collection right here. left frontal area just behind the forehead. he had an operation a few hours later. concerned enough to urgently perform that operation and found the blood collection and thought they saw something else at that time. in the operating room, but weren't sure. take as few days for the final diagnosis to come back, which is as you point out, john a tumor. a type of brain cancer known at glioblastoma. this is a brain kansacancer, st in the brain as opposed to somewhere else to the body and spreads to the brain. a surprise for the senator and his family and also the doctors. they thought maybe just a blood colle
