it appears now the city of guthrie. you would know downtown guthrie from rainman.e downtown scenes were shot in guthrie, oklahoma, for the movie rainman. and its circulation is right here for four corners. here's oklahoma city proper. edmund, oklahoma, the tv stations are over here. as this continues to move to the north and to the northeast, there's nothing to slow it down. this storm is still on the ground with a half mile wide tornado, making damage as it travels all the way from about 40 miles west of the city of oklahoma. now it is north of the city of oklahoma on the ground doing damage to everything in its path with wind speeds as david was estimating, at at least 150 miles per hour. we know that the storm that moved through joplin, missouri, was an ef-4 tornado, estimated to be 190 to 198 miles per hour. there's no reason to believe that this storm at some point in its time being on the ground could not have been an ef-4 tornado. there will be fatalities. there will be casualties with this storm. there's no way to get out of the way sometimes of a 3 or 4 on

the president has decided according to savannah guthrie not to release the picture., now scheduled at 2:00. savannah joins us from the white house. what went in the decision? >> reporter: i think the white house was clearly concerned that releasing the photos, photos that have been described to me as very gruesome, would potentially enflame the muslim world, potentially become an iconic image in the muslim world that people could rally around. remember, they took such care to bury osama bin laden's body at sea so there wouldn't be a shrine. you don't want a shrine that is a photographic shrine. so there is that. there wasn't -- it seems, a clamoring to get this photograph. there wasn't a lot of skepticism as we understand it. people really doubting, in fact you are osama bin laden's daughter acknowledging yes, indeed, he was dead. it sounds like the president weighed the equities. we decided that the president has decided not to have the photos released. as i mentioned, they are incredibly graphic, now, that alone is not necessarily an obstacle to releasing the photo

i'm savannah guthrie. chuck todd is off today. the unemployment numbers just released this hour, 244,000 new jobs were added in april. the unemployment rate moved up to 9%. we'll have complete coverage of those new numbers and hear from the white house late they are morning. first let's get to the rundown. one day after an emotional visit to ground zero president obama heads to ft. campbell, kentucky, today to personally thank members of the commando unit that killed osama bin laden. that unit also brought back a treasure trove of intelligence, some of it pointing to possible new attacks inside the u.s. nbc's jim miklaszewski is live again for us at the pentagon. mik, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. before we get to those reports of that intelligence, al qaeda has today confirmed the death of osama bin laden. over the years they have been pretty prompt in confirming the deaths of their leaders. they do confirm that al qaeda -- that osama bin laden was killed. and in this release, which is in arabic, but the translation th

- some call it a heart stopping moment according to reporting we have from my colleague, savannah guthrie. they killed osama bin laden, shot him through the eye, the left eye, that kind of level of detail, we're told there is a picture that exists that has been taken by american forces. and the united states government is now deciding what to do with that picture and how to demonstrate not only to the american citizenry, but to the arab world in particular that osama bin laden is indeed dead. he's been buried at sea as we have learned over the last several hours in accordance with islamic dictates of the religion, cleansed and buried at sea within 24 hours after his death. we do expect the president to mention what has happened very briefly. this previously sket ll lly sch, two medal of honors. and what we have heard today, in a statement to employees of the cia from leon panetta, the director there, he's headed to the defense department, is not only congratulations and lauding the american forces, but a warning that there could be retribution, there could be operations, revenge operation

that's just a suburb of oklahoma city and on toward guthrie. tornado emergency down near norman, oklahoma and more with a big tornado on the ground and another one down near washington. that tornado has been on the ground for a while. it is going to be one long night, because it is certainly not over, and in fact, with the heat of the day just now being 6:00 central time, it is just getting going for places east of i-35 into tulsa and eventually, yes, that word joplin right there, as the weather just rakes across oklahoma and into the eastern sections of oklahoma county and into oklahoma city. that's where the humidity is even higher. that could make the storms get a little stronger. if they stay together as individual supercell tornadoes, there will be -- there's one, two, see how they're all separate? if they all line up, they will fight for the energy and there won't be as many big tornadoes, but we know there have been fatalities today and there continue to be fatalities tonight as long as all these storms stay together in individual krecel

it moved across i-40 to el reno, just south of cashen and south of guthrie and traveled on the ground, eliot. it was on the ground for about 60 miles as a half-mile-wide tornado. it's impressive in itself, but it's also scary to think that something that could be that big could be on the ground for so very long. get rid of this here for you for a second. we have some video here, and there's a couple of reporters in the shot, but that's okay. this is actually some of the damage from that tornado. and i'm going to circle something for you. there's a little brick building right there. the people that you see in this shot were in that little structure. that's the only reason that they are alive. there used to be a house right here. it is completely gone, leveled. leveled right on down to the slab. there is nothing left of the house. without that storm shelter, they would not be alive today. then we take you to koco, channel 5 affiliate there. here's a tractor-trailer -- well, that's just really the trailer. they disconnected the tractor, because it had already completely fell over. i-40.

savannah guthrie is our lead correspondent. linda, you did work on the case for about 22 months.ense is saying it wasn't murder at all. this was an accident that caylee drowned in the family's swimming pool. did this defense surprise you at all? >> it didn't surprise me at all. i have been in the case. you know, matt, as early as 2008, october, before the body was found, people were saying that the child may have drowned in the pool because of the whole incident with the ladder. no one investigated, took water samples from the child's bones to see if she could have drowned. >> the defense says george, casey's father, found the little girl, found caylee, but they didn't say what happened in the six months between when the little girl allegedly drowned in the swimming pool and her body was found in the woods. aren't they going to have to explain that? >> i think the prosecution has to explain it. the prosecution also didn't say what happened in the five hours before george said he left. i don't think that's a defense burden. i think that becomes a prosecution burden. >> if you beli

savannah guthrie will use her background as a lawyers as co-host of our 9:00 hour.et's talk about the case. they will battle it out. forensic experts over the forensic evidence or lack thereof in this case. what do you think will have the big impact on the jury? >> no question casey's car is at the center of the case. in the trunk they showed hair that showed signs of decomposition. they say there is a stain that some say has an outline of a child. there is the so-called smell of death evidence. this is potentially powerful for the jury. >> is there a chance it could backfire? even though they talked to the jurors or potential jurors about the possibilitile of asking them to smell something unpleasant how do you think it will go over? >> it's a gamble. you wonder if it's necessary to go that far. they are talking about opening a tin can and letting the jurors smell this foul odor that was inside the car. the judge hasn't made it clear he'll let the evidence in. he said he doesn't want to turn jurors into witnesses, but why do the prosecutorses want to do it? they ha

donald rumsfeld will speak out in a live interview, but first savannah guthrie has new details on the learned? >> good morning to you, meredith. in talking to a u.s. official this morning, we have learned more on the raid and the fact that the president was actually able to monitor what was happening on the ground in pakistan during this raid in realtime. this u.s. official wouldn't describe the technology that enabled this but suffice it to say the president had audio and visual updates as the raid was unfolding. at approximately 3:55 eastern time when they got word that osama bin laden was killed, i'm told in the situation room applause went up. officials also say there were two heart-stopping moments during the raid itself. first is when the helicopters that were supposed to, as i understand it, not land on the compound, but rather hover and lower navy seals -- excuse me, special ops forces onto the ground. however, one of the helicopters stopped working. it hit the ground. i'm told it didn't crash but it was on the ground. the seals went forward with the operation. as that was unf
