our matt gutman is in osteen, florida, tonight, where 420 fires are burning across the smokey sunshinete. matt? >> reporter: diane, and those fires have reduced 300,000 square acres of forest here in florida into just smoldering ashes. a moon scape, played out all across the south today. you may be able to hear all that rumbling of lightning just a couple of miles away. there were 50,000 lightning strikes just the other night. that means more fires sparked up here in florida for firefighters and others to deal with. tonight, near houston, new fires on the march, drawing a giant curtain of smoke across the horizon. and 200 people were ordered to evacuate, as over 100 firefighters from ten agencies battle the flames on the ground and from the air. infernos as high as office buildings have scorched state-size chunks of forest across the country's south. in arizona, the wallow fire is now the largest wildfire in state history, gobbling up half a million acres, forcing thousands from their homes. and with the wind kicking up this weekend, most won't be allowed back until next week. >> best

in florida, abc's matt gutman found that conditions are no better. >> reporter: over 400 separate wildfires in florida, scorching 300,000 acres of forest here. now, this moonscape is created partly by natural causes. a lot of it lightning. >> reporter: in all, the 4.3 million acres that burned this year is already 2.5 times the natural average for the last ten years. and let's take a look at the seven states that are dealing with fire stretching from florida, west wards towards arizona. the forecast for the desert southwest not looking good. we've got 40-mile-an-hour wind gusts expected. and very low humidity for today. meanwhile, thunderstorms as i mentioned earlier, are helping the situation in the southeast. scattered storms as well, that rain is going to help clear out the atmosphere which will improve the air quality. unfortunately, however, dan, about 25% of the country is dealing with exceptional drought conditions and that could have widespread implications on the agricultural industry. back to you. >> jackie, thank you. >>> to italy in a courtroom where amanda knox is appealing her

abc's matt gutman has that story. >> reporter: it was certainly unorthodox. possibly illegal. deadly? the sarasota county school board's report questions how, in the space of three months, three students hypnotized by principal george kenney died. the first in march, a car crash. the second april, a suicide. the third in may, also a suicide. all of them just shortly after being hypnotized. kenney was open about his work, which he said was to help motivate students to focus on school and athlelecs. but officials discovered kenney had hypnotized up to 75 people at this school, including students and their parents, as well as staff members and their children. >> he's trustworthy. he's honont. he's been a great role model. >> reporter: kenney had even advertised it on amazon, recording these. >> you will be going into a deep hypnotic trance. although we call it sleep, you will actually be very aware of everything that happens. >> reporter: it was not unnoticed. kenney received three school board warnings to stop hypnotizing students. but did not. his attorney says he's done nothin
