guy johnson. ♪ guy: wednesday the 23rd. 30 minutes into this wednesday trading session in the unitedtates. from london, i'm guy johnson. alix steel is over in new york. welcome everybody to "bloomberg markets." it does feel as if we have completely round-tripped from the fed, but the fed's effect is being felt. we have come full circle, but there's a volatility, and something has changed if the numbers haven't. alix: i totally agree. the title of my board was still waiting for godot. we got godot a little bit last week, and chair powell tamped on that, now we are still waiting for godot potentially. we are looking at modest inflation that is going to be managed in better growth, and that usually means a good environment for equities. that is exactly what we are seeing yet again. the nasdaq 100, big tech up. the dollar down. yields stable right around 1.5%. some commodities still holding firm. i guess the difference is what will copper, aluminum, lumber did this time around that changes the narrative. guy: the data in the states is starting to moderate a little bit. we see it in the m

guy: yeah, i definitely get. [laughter] alix: it's monday, man. guy: it is monday. is here to rescue me. she's going to dig into what is moving markets. abigail: this rally for the metals are standing out. on the year, we have copper, iron, zinc, industrial metals surging. this on the expectation of an economic rebound coming out of the pandemic. let's take a closer look at copper, also known as dr. copper, a great tell on global economic growth, and perhaps china in particular, given that they are the world's largest user of natural resources. over the last year, copper has a beautiful uptrend. you can see this out of the march low, up about wonder 50% or get each time testing the 50 day moving average. those buyers stepping up. it appears that is happening now. if we back up the picture a little bit and take a look at this huge rally in copper over the last few years, we are going to see that we have a parabolic uptrend. over this time, up 150%, one of the best rally for copper ever, back in 2008, and after the parabolic uptrend, typically have some consolidation.

guy: ok.loomberg. ♪ alix: every friday guy and i highlight a chart that caught our eye from the past week. i'm going to go first -- not competitive, purely for fun, kind of competitive, i am looking at the delta variant, which we tracked in the u.k., certain elements of portugal, and does this crimp the recovery and stock market claims kid this is seven-day cases for 100,000 people. you can see it moving up and coming down just a touch in the u.k.. italy is the greenline. the u.s. is the blue line -- a little higher, you have to look close, but it is there. it is the same with certain other areas in here. if the vaccination rate does not keep up with the cases we are looking at, does this reverse the reopening trade we have been seen or will the market on other stuff? fed, earnings? i don't know. guy: maybe. i feel like the market is feeling like it is moving beyond some of the stories. i feel like we will have to wait until october, november, before we see this stuff getting interesting. for

guy: ok.ne of the things that might change that, to come back to what lagarde is talking about, but i think draghi feels like the force here -- where do you see the fiscal debate going in europe? draghi is basically saying next year you cannot go back and start tightening. we need much more than we have now on the fiscal front, and everybody has to be on board with it. i had this question a little earlier on -- do you think this message will be heard? kit: i think it is a better chance of being heard than with christine lagarde and mario draghi in place then mario draghi in the ecb, for example. we have taken -- changed the actor, and the most credible players when merkel is gone are going to be lagarde and draghi -- they are proper big hitters. they have won the argument with me. i suspect they have won the argument when anyone listens in london, new york, or washington, but there is a lot of parochial view. you don't have to go very far before people will show you a chart of debt to gdp rati

european close," with guy johnson and alix steel. ♪ guy: 30 minutes to the close, here's what you needo know out of europe this hour. a feeding frenzy in the european bond market. the appetite for yield sees an avalanche of orders in the 10 year recovery bond. a five-year trade truce agreed between the u.s. and eu on subsidies for boeing and airbus. the european union will within days at the u.s. to its travel white list, lifting quarantine restrictions. as for the markets -- -- kind of the formation of a curve in terms of a proper, maybe proper sort of complement or competitor to the treasury market, or more likely the bond market. alix: that is going to be really interesting. here in the u.s., retail numbers disappointed, but previous numbers revised higher, which made everything seem ok. the recovery still intact and inflation still rising, so that told us everything we already knew. in the equity market as we await the fed, i swear it is about a commodity market, freeport the worst performing stock within the s&p as copper gets hit as well. we run too far, too fast. we are going to

guy: wednesday the 16th. 30 minutes into the trading day stateside. from london, and guy johnson. kailey leinz in today in new york. alix steel has the day off. welcome to "bloomberg markets." what i'm trying to figure out is what makes the front pages of the financial newspapers tomorrow morning to get is it the biden-putin summit, or something that comes out of the fed presser from jay powell a little later on? kailey: we are about four hours away from that the decision, and ahead of it we are going nowhere. the s&p 500 is essentially flat right now. you are seeing a little more outperformance from some of the tech stocks, but we are unchanged at the headline level. in the bond market, no real movement ahead of that fed decision. traders awaiting any cues on normalization, and of course, waiting for those dots. you're seeing a little more movement in some currency pairs, one of them being the russian ruble, stronger against the u.s. dollar by about 0.4% as biden and putin are meeting in geneva. i am keeping an eye on oil as well. we are back above the 70 do dollars -- the $72 a

guy: absolutely. and the data continues to come in i think not as strongly as some of the other data points would seem to suggest. you saw the claims number coming through today. it is basically unchanged on where we were. you are still not getting huge amounts of traction in the labor market. i wonder whether that comes later this year. it will be interesting to see if you get these types of numbers continuing, whether that is the catalyst that would require the fed may be start thinking about or acting upon that paper narrative -- that taper narrative. maybe that puts it where the fed expect it to be at the begin part of next year. alix: the question is raised for the ecb, do they have to sort of speeded up if march 2022 is still going to be the end of pepp, particularly if the fed moves before the ecb which looks much more likely. guy: i think the ecb is in a really difficult position at the moment. you take a look at that three year projection, three years out you've got inflation at 1.4%, so they

guy johnson. ♪ guy: thursday the 17th. 30 minutes into the trading day.rom london, i'm guy johnson. alix steel is over in york. welcome to -- in new york. welcome to "bloomberg markets." yesterday, kailey and i were having a debate on what would be the front of the news, biden and putin or jay powell at the fed. alix: so who won, you or kailey? guy: powell. neither of us were that committed. alix: absolutely right. here's where we are. the ripple effect from the fed is most definitely calming down, and part because jobless claims rose for the first time since april last week. that is rippling through the markets. the s&p is now flat versus down. the bloomberg dollar index is still up, but off the highs of the session. we are still watching the moving average, very close to the 200 day. you did have a tiny bid for the bond market, with yields coming down about three basis points after the huge move yesterday. gold still off by over 4% on that hawkish move to the fed. but nonetheless come you can still see the reaction functions from the market perspective

guy: absolutely.e are not over yet when it comes to the conversation on what is going on with central banks. alix: never. guy: it would be nice some time to focus away from it, but they have certainly become the dominant theme. what is the impact of what the fed has just done on other central banks? we just talked about the ecb. erik nielsen, unicredit group chief economist, joining us next to talk about that. this is bloomberg. ♪ ♪ chair powell: inflation could turn out to be higher and more persistent than we expect. >> of course, it is a multiyear path forward. having monetary policy bring inflation up to where we wanted to be, it is not a situation which is going to end very quickly. >> it is clear that the global inflation increased quite considerably over the last couple of months, but we still see it as a temporary phenomenon, so we do not really see a big risk of global inflation picking up over the medium to long-term. chair powell: it is not a time to try to reach hard conclusions about the

guy: absolutely.s been central to the play, that this is going to become an institutional product. that has been the whole idea for the last year or so, when you talk to people on board with the bitcoin narrative. there's this idea that institutional money is going to come in and stabilize the situation, but it is not. it becomes a negative loop rather than a positive loop. alix: yes. guy: ok, yes. alix: yes. but then i think you need to get some clarity, the same thing as when you are dealing with carbon or some thing like that. you need some concrete rules to understand how your benchmarking it. it is kind of like having a toddler. they need the rules to be free to explore. guy: yeah, and the chinese aren't really keen on this at the moment. alix: no. you didn't pick up on the toddler thing, but whatever. guy: i got the toddler thing. guy: i don't the guy misted.udging by the price action today, it looks like there's a little bit more. today that's a decent pop and that stock, but it feels as if these markets are on holiday, looking for another analyst. maybe i missed on odd little about -- missed out on little bit of that last week. alix: you had some kind of catalyst with janet yellen and her remarks that higher rates are a plus. but no real reaction here. the nasdaq totally flat. you would think that if you have higher taxes globally for companies, a 15% minimum, that would affect companies the most. we will break that down in the next couple of hours as well. the 10 year yield plummeted seven basis points friday, now we are up by about one, but still lower range bound after that number, despite what janet yellen said to bloomberg. the bloomberg dollar index down by almost 0.2%. that is really the story on friday, pushing some of those currencies like the euro higher. that is going to be quite interesting. prude at one point -- crude at one

guy: i want to check -- is at the white house. guy: tomorrow u.k.ristine lagarde speaks at the brussels economic forum. u.k. housing data as well as eurozone continuing confidence numbers. a lot of cpi data out of a number of different locations. keep an eye on that. we are looking for a catalyst. maybe that could provide one. alix: right, although you have central bank saying still transitory. it feels like even if you get a big number, will that move the needle? maybe the hawks in europe in the u.s., but it has been discounted by what powell continues to beat the drum with. guy: to be honest the big number of the week, everything builds up to it. it is the payroll number. if you get something circa 700,000, north of 700,000, i think people are looking at the moment when we start to get traction the u.s. labor market. that is not happened yet and is, a lot of people by surprise. alix: when we get those one million prints? coming up, adam posen, peterson institute president will be joining "balance of power" with david westin on bloomberg radio and

what do you guys think?k the first rate hike is going to come in 2023, mainly because they have a clear timeline. we know that the fed is shifting slowly away from removing accommodations, but if you thing about the timeline, if they start to taper in december and then they move from their, the taper will probably take about eight months, and then if they pause, even for a small period of time, that easily gets you into 2023. what we honestly don't know is how the economy is going to look two years from now. will we still have that support of fiscal impulse? will we still have the supply chain bottlenecks? i assume those will be gone by then, but there's still a lot of uncertainty around what the market can price for the long run. alix: do you think it is possible that with this kind of move in the bond market, as well as what the fed is talking about, that we see growth being tamped down here? kelsey: we are actually really optimistic about growth still. as i look to the summer, i am seeing positive signs,

guy: i think the u.k.y having to take a step that is slower forward in terms of what it is doing. it is about to take a step forward and it has paused in doing so. the fact that italy put a five day quarantine on travelers arriving into europe highlights the concerns there are. we talked yesterday about lisbon. lisbon is not allowing people into the weekend, basically to party, because they are seeing a real pickup in the delta variant and they do not want transmitting that back to the rest of the country. you are seeing the early stages of a surge, and the italian decision is one you could see replicated elsewhere. in terms of the stock story, i think there was an impact. certainly the pound. the biggest focus definitely has been what has been coming out of the fed. you can see the impact on the trade in europe. big losses across europe. alix: big losses here as well. coming up, rebuilding venezuela's oil industry. bloomberg's exclusive interview with venezuelan president nicolas maduro. this is bloomberg

guy: fair enough.tian: i think we should distinguish between the risks that are fashionable to talk about and the risks that are real. for the last six to nine months, people have said it is a bubble, this has gone too far. the simple truth is the market is driven by the magnitude of the growth rebound. we have hands-down the sharpest acceleration and global growth that we have seen at any point, so we shouldn't be surprised that credit spreads are very tight and the markets are very high. so where the risks are real , a, the virus is not under control. we really need the reopening to come through to power the last mile of the growth acceleration. the second risk is that the policy mix you have chosen in the u.s. will very likely lead to an overheating of the economy . i do think there is a residual risk of a bond market tantrum, as you have to go from pricing a super easy fed tone that responds to the overheating in the economy. alix: to be clear, nothing keeps me up at night. in terms of individual e

guy: exactly.t the regulators cannot do anything about it and central banks are not in control of the process, they are. they are so in control. increasingly will hear -- we will hear more about that. alix: they may be late but they are still in control. mnuchin talked about inflation and he says the fed may need to go into a period of normalizing policy. guy: absolutely. we have had a series of conversations about this over the last few days. we are also getting great input from the qatar economic forum we are helping host at the moment. bridgewater associates chairman on that, cozy i ray dalio -- co-cio ray dalio was talking about that. he does not think the fed should tighten. he was on the forum with stephanie flanders. ray: there is something like 10% of gdp stored in financial assets that will be coming out. it is likely there will be a big pickup in demand and that will probably raise prices significantly. housing prices themselves are going up. rental prices are going down. the big things -

this is bloomberg. ♪ ♪ guy: live from london, i'm guy johnson. this is "bloomberg markets."s a game of two halves. we are wrapping up the first half. what does it tell us about the second half? what kind of tactics do you want to be employing in that second half? let's talk about what it looks like so far. abigail doolittle has all the details. abigail: overall it has been a very good half for stock longs. the s&p 500 up for the fifth quarter in a row, gaining about 90% over the last five quarters. longest quarterly winning streak going back to december 2019. if we break it down sector wise, the best sector this year so far, energy, it's best sector ever since -- it's best first half since 1998. that is a piece of the reflation trade. another piece of the reflation trade, the financials of about 20% with yields backing up. two of the worst sectors, staples, the dividend rich sectors, and utilities because yields are so much more attractive. this is the interesting story for yields because in the first quarter, the 10 year yield backing up by about 80 basis points. over the l
