gwynne: hello. thank you for coming by one to talk this afternoon how i came to this book or how the book came to me which sometimes is a simultaneous event. how a connecticut yankee public career in journalism and failed attempts at fiction suddenly decides he wants to be a historian. but not only that he wants to write about comanches and the great plains which is as far from connecticut as the frozen moons of jupiter. i will not bore you with the details of my literary past but to put it as briefly as possible i had my little epiphany in the spring of 1970. i had just been admitted to princeton university and i was traveling there for a weekend where you see if you want to go there. it was a glorious day in america. -- day in may. just like this morning and the spring was in full bloom. i had taken a train and the last leg was on a smaller train which was the princeton to princeton junction that took the right to the campus. i happen to be reading of book by f. scott fitzgerald called "this side

that's gwynns falls parkway in front of us. that is one area we found ourselves in. throughout the neighborhoods here if we can get up to ricerstown road here in a second throughout the neighborhood you are seeing dozens if not hundreds of individuals carrying rocks and bricks waiting for an opportunity to throw something at the police. when they do and if they are in range of police police are shooting either pepper bullets or they are marking them with paint, and i'm looking down riserstown road and you can see the smoke at the end of the road. right near north avenue and pennsylvania avenue very close to the location where freddie gray was arrested and there is -- that's where the cvs is that's being looted, and that's also where a police car is being burned. you can see the black smoke now really picking up. i don't know if other structures or cars down there are burning but the smoke be has gotten worse in the last few minutes. there seems to be a lull in activity at this point. police now in a purely defensive position. they can't get to the police car or the c

i'm at gwynns falls and reisterstown road. this woman is trying to get home and this kind gentleman is letting her through. you can see that black smoke, something was just set on fire in that direction, the police are here holding their line at a stand-off. no stones -- i'm being told now that it is a car burning. that's the smoke that we're seeing down reisterstown road and i believe you're looking at that live video as well. i can spin down 180 degrees and look in the other direction on reisterstown road and see some black smoke rising up there as well. it's now dissipated but fires are being set. there was one set in the road here. you can see where i am this entire area is littered with the stuff that these people have been throwing at police officers. there's a chunk of brick. there was a tough scene out here for a long time. things have calmed down. if we take a walk down here a little bit more you can see that black smoke rising and in the distance you can see the maryland national building one of the icon i can -- ico
