amazon is slowing down shipment of some hachette titles and some new hachette titles say they take weeks to ship as the site tries to re-direct you to alternative titles. if you want to pre-ort a hachette title coming out later in the year, those pre-order buttons have entirely disappeared from some upcoming hachette books. what's going on is a dispute over pricing for ebooks on amazon. who sets the price for a book? and how much of that price gets publisher? at stake are the bigger profit margins on ebooks, about 75% compared to the 40 percent on a hard cover book sale. the bigger question is: how today's book publishers sell books in the digital age. amazon appears to have the upper hand after a court ruling ended conclusion among book publishers to set prices on apple's ibooks app once upon a time, it was publishers who set the prices we pay for the books we buy. the legacy of that is when you open up a book, the price is often printed on the cover or the jacket. now, retailers have the upper hand. the question is: which side are you on? the publishers who want the right to set the pr
